Re: May 2024
The difference there is the winter. Gainesville is in the middle of the peninsula and there are plenty of sunny days in the winter. The rain mainly falls in late June, July, August, September - the opposite of College Station. Closer to Savannah and east coast rainfall: 45-55 inches. There's a reas...

Re: May 2024
It's that angle from the Gulf since most of the prevailing mid and upper level air is SW to NE or West to East. For example, Corpus Christi is right on the Gulf Coast but only receives about 32 inches of rain a year. They are closer to the SW cap and Mexican air squashing rain chances. The dry line...

Re: May 2024
Obscene how the north side has gotten so much that it's going to flood people out of homes and it's bone dry south of I-10 The SE/coastward areas often do have a drying tendency during spring storm patterns. But the opposite tends to be true during the summer, when Brazoria county, Galveston county...

Re: February 2024
The saving grace is that temps in March usually aren't all that hot — so vegetative stress would be low even if prolonged dryness were to verify for the month.
But yes, if rains don't get cranking come April, and especially May, then big trouble happens ... unless the wetter summer forecasts verify.

Re: February 2024
So many acres of land being absolutely obliterated by the wild fires, and we arent even close to summer yet, i really cant blame folks for wanting to move away from texas , precipitation is going to be a big problem in the months ahead, not sure how many more summers I can endure here Maybe lol, bu...

Re: February 2024
Plus the suburbs are blocked from the wind just like anything inside of Beltway 8 or inside of 610 would be, which was my point to begin with. It would be interesting to see the impact that vegetation (especially tree coverage) has on the perceived windiness. For instance, the comparison of your Wh...

Re: February 2024
When you’re from a small town like me then you’d understand. People from small towns count the suburban areas as part of the city. Fair enough. Are you from Wharton or El Campo? Both are pretty small towns, but El Campo is a good bit bigger as it's at least over 10,000 in population. That said, as ...

Re: February 2024
Y’all city folk don’t have to deal with it like I do living out in the country out in the open. Crap is annoying. Unfortunately, the next 6 weeks or so will probably have lots of windy days. It’s that time of year. But Jasons2k is not a "city person", though — he lives in The Woodlands, w...

Re: 2024 Hurricane Season Discussion
-PDO sucks. Yes, that is a factor that I've seen referenced a lot on s2k regarding the favor of summer heat and drought in Texas. I'm genuinely trying to figure out if the persistence of ridging/drought in the Texas area is due more to remote forcing from teleconnections like the PDO, or if there w...

Re: 2024 Hurricane Season Discussion
Wider views of the NMME and CanSIPS: As you can see, not really much of a difference between the two models. Pretty good agreement. FWIW "We expect that the Gulf Coast, especially the Texas Coast, will be at a higher risk for direct impacts from a tropical system this year." Paul Pastelok...

Re: February 2024
Yes, I've noticed quite a bit of predictions regarding an active cyclone season for summer 2024. I'm not sure if it's simply via Nina baseline, or if there is some other special phenomenon that is coming into play this year.

Re: February 2024
Yep, winter is over. This morning was the last chance this season for any freezing temps to materialize in the are — and they mostly failed to do so (sans certain cold spots, largely north of I-10). As for summer, it's possible that this year might be more forgiving than the previous two in terms of...

Re: February 2024
Good trends in terms of warmer weather. Winter freezes are totally useless here, given that they are mere handfuls on average compared to 365 days.
That said, the Feb10 12z EURO operational did show quite a chilly solution. Let's see if that was a trend (though the EPS 12z wasn't exactly in line).

Re: February 2024
All the birds and garden reptiles over here are convinced that winter is done. The fact that reptiles are showing up just ~2 weeks after a cold snap is a testament to the (overall) mild/warmth of the SETX winter climate. Even when factoring in the cold snaps, the (relatively) brief durations keep g...

Re: February 2024
Well, whatever winter has left better get going within the window of the next ~2-3 weeks. Even in the context of cold snaps, things become increasingly gentler/milder going into late Feb, then into March.
