January 2017 -Warming Trend To End The Month

Starting the thread ... the talk of a January 2007 analog is exciting. For us in Austin, we experienced a multi-day winter weather event with sleet and freezing rain which pretty much shut down the city for two days. In fact, we had 80 consecutive hours of at or below freezing during that event. And...

Re: December 2016- Tracking Arctic Air/Christmas Outlook

Have 26 degrees with a wind chill of 15 degrees here in SW Austin. Downright frigid! Coldest airmass in two years.

Re: December 2016- Tracking Arctic Air/Christmas Outlook

Anticipating fropa here in the Austin area around 9 pm tonight. Going to spend today finishing outdoor preps for the hard freeze.

Quick question: I'm told sago palms are good unless temps get below 20 degrees. True?

Re: December 2016- Tracking Arctic Air/Christmas Outlook

Looks like the Arctic front will move through the Austin area Sat night around 9 or 10 pm. Then we'll see three consecutive freezing nights including a hard freeze Sun night/Mon morn. Coldest airmass in two years!

Re: December 2016- Tracking Arctic Air/Christmas Outlook

Cool, raw day here in south central Texas. Forecasted highs were mid 50s but we barely hit 50 at 2 p.m. Thick cloud cover holding strong like yesterday. Has that "winter" feel to it.

Re: December 2016- Tracking Arctic Air/Christmas Outlook

Mrs. Portastorm's work is having their holiday party Sunday evening here in Austin at the Trail of Lights ... where expected temps will be at or slightly below freezing with wind chills in the upper teens or low 20s.

That's one party I am NOT looking forward to. ;)

Re: Tracking the Tropics: TS Gaston & INVEST 99L

It’s inflammatory and misleading and upsetting to coastal residents, and I humbly propose that we quit it. I have to disagree with Mr. Norcross on this statement. People are going to access the information one way or another. It can't be 'hidden' from the public. We rely on professional Mets to pro...

Re: August 2016: Significant Pattern Change/Rain Chances Ret

Looks like a long night ahead for us in the I-35 corridor Austin/San Antonio. We're looking at the likelihood of 6-8" of rain with as much as 15" possible in isolated spots. This on already saturated ground. Very sobering language coming out of the EWX office as well as NOAA's WPC excessiv...

Re: August 2016: Significant Pattern Change/Rain Chances Ret

Looks like TD #12 in the EPac may create some trouble this weekend for those of us in soaked parts of south central and southeast Texas. I believe the word "mischief" is appropriate ... one of srainhoutx's faves. ;)

Re: August 2016: Significant Pattern Change/Rain Chances Ret

If the latest HRRR is to be believed, it shows things gradually weakening over the Houston area and almost nothing by 2AM. I'm suspicious of that, however. The HRRR has really struggled this weekend in Texas as I've been following it closely. NWS folks have told me in the past that short-range mode...

Re: February 2016: Warm & Mostly Dry Ahead

Just a little post to put this anomalously warm "winter" in perspective ... on average, Austin has 19 days where the temperature goes below freezing. So far this winter season we have had ONE day when we hit 31 degrees.

Re: February 2016:Tracking Early Month Plains Winter Storm

Hit 86 degrees here in Austin at Camp Mabry (KATT) at 3:15 pm, easily shattering the record high for this date of 83 set in 1911. It was probably helped by the West Texas dry line which slipped into town and kinda bisected the metro area with the temp rising 4 degrees and dew point dropping 14 degre...

Re: February 2016:Tracking Early Month Plains Winter Storm

That is true, srainhoutx . There is also a fire weather danger today in west Texas and stretching into parts of central Texas by Tuesday. It's hard to believe it's there after having the state's wettest year on record ... but NWS offices are expressing concern due to high winds, low humidity, and de...

Re: February 2016:Tracking Early Month Plains Winter Storm

The 0z and 6z GFS operational runs have backed off on the winter storm scenario for the Feb 9-11 period. However, the 0z Euro operational run lays down a swath of 1-2" of snow across much of south central Texas in that period. The CMC remains bullish as well. The signals are clearly there for a...

Re: February 2016 Will Winter Arrive?

Thanks for the upate, srain.

Over the last approximate 120 years, Austin has recorded 51 snowfalls. Some of the largest ones have occurred in February, including the last snowfall of significance (1" or more) which happened on Valentines Day 2004 ... when 1.6" fell on the city.

Re: February 2016 Will Winter Arrive?

Analog-schmanalog! I got flowers and plants blooming here in Austin and they think it's March already. :D

"Winter" has been a no-show here in Austin. I hope that changes soon. We can't even get any rain as El Nino shut off its spigot around Christmas (at least for us).

Re: January 2016: Fast/Active Split Flow Pattern Ahead

The 0z European model should it verify would lay down 3" of snow across all of Travis County and the metro Austin area late next weekend. Higher snow amounts in the central and southern Hill Country. Wow! Does it show any for SE Texas? As a matter of fact, yes! Trace to 1" amounts and mor...
