Re: 2018 National Tropical Weather Conference

I've been monitoring the S. Padre weather for next week. Looks like lows in the low 70s and highs in the upper 70s. Possibly some rain on Wednesday as a cold front washes out over south TX. Water temps 75-77 degrees. You'll have to right-click on the image below and choose "view image" to ...

Re: 2018 National Tropical Weather Conference

Alex got my plane ticket yesterday. I fly over to Harlingen at 10:55 on Tuesday and fly back at 1:20pm Saturday. I think Brian (Katdaddy) is on the same flight. Still not 100% sure I won't change my return flight to Sunday. April is a busy time for me, though.

Re: 2018 National Tropical Weather Conference

Just heard from Alex Garcia down there that he wants me to present something at the conference. I plan on flying over Tuesday morning. Not sure if I'll fly back Saturday or Sunday. Could go fishing Saturday and take the dinner cruise that evening.

Re: JANUARY 2018 - Warming Trend Begins/Will It Last Long?

30 degrees in SW Houston this morning. Those low clouds that were just southwest of the city yesterday afternoon moved overhead and acted as a blanket.

Re: JANUARY 2018 - Winter Storm/Hard Freeze Warnings

This was supposed to be a "warmer/dryer," winter eh.... ;) I'll take the blame for that. I told everyone on the Storm2K forum last winter that since I had the winter of my dreams (warm and dry) that this winter would be very cold and icy across Texas to compensate them for a lack of winte...

Re: JANUARY 2018 - Winter Storm/Hard Freeze Warnings

The snow was always expected to end by around 6pm, so it's no surprise that we are seeing the precip taper off on radar.

Re: JANUARY 2018 - Winter Storm/Hard Freeze Warnings

Here's a movie of the snow and me in the sleet. Some of the flakes are large (nickle-sized). Nothing too heavy. Video is 144mb and may take a bit to load before it plays.

Re: JANUARY 2018 - Winter Storm Warning/Advisory For Tuesday

I left work early so that I wasn't trapped by Hobby Airport this afternoon. It's 26 degrees with a steady light sleet in SW Houston. Sleet is gathering at the base of our oak tree. Individual sleet pellets are rather small, as they're forming more from drizzle than light rain. No sign of any snowfla...

Re: JANUARY 2018 - Winter Storm Warning/Advisory For Tuesday

35 in SW Houston (Westbury). I have toiletries and a change of clothes plus my ski jacket in my car. Don't know if I'll be able to make it home from work near Hobby airport around 4pm. I'm thinking surface streets will be OK. I could take W. Belfort from I-45 north of Hobby all the way west to my ho...

Re: JANUARY 2018 - Winter Storm Warning/Advisory For Tuesday

I'm thinking that total liquid precip amounts across Houston will not be high, perhaps up to around .25 inch. However, much of this precip may fall when road temperatures on bridges and overpasses are at 32f or colder. This would result in bridges and overpasses getting a glazing of ice by tomorrow ...

Re: JANUARY 2018 - Time to talk about some real cold?

Overnight Euro certainly does paint a cold and snowy picture for SE TX next Tue/Wed. This time, though, it is forecasting surface temperatures well below freezing during the precip. This could lead to major travel issues Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday - IF it happens. One thing appears certain, it ...

Re: JANUARY 2018 - Time to talk about some real cold?

GFS and Euro are in much better agreement for the temps across TX early next week. This is not looking like a snow event, but there could be some sleet mixed in with the rain as precip ends up in the DFW area. I wouldn't absolutely rule out any sleet pellets here in Houston, but I wouldn't forecast ...

Re: December 2017: Christmas Cold / Pattern Change

I just found out that I can plot soundings from the European model on my workstation.

Here's the 00Z Euro Skew-T sounding for IAH on Christmas morning. Relative humidity near zero aloft. Surface temperature about -1C (30F). Cold and dry.

Re: December 2017: Christmas Cold / Pattern Change

Temperatures in west and NW Canada are only about 5-8 degrees below normal. That's not very cold. Latest GFS run says no winter precip across Texas through 16 days. I didn't buy that prediction of a 1060-1070mb high coming down without any cold air in northern Canada. Chances of any winter precip he...

Re: December 2017: Christmas Cold / Ice Across Texas?

Man, the models have gone schizo. 12z reverts back to a fetch of moisture over Texas and snow in Brownsville on Christmas Day  I'm sure that will happen. The 12Z what? GFS and Canadian have no precip and cold temps Christmas day. Canadian has a low in the mid 20s, the GFS a low in the mid 30s....

Re: December 2017: Christmas Cold / Ice Across Texas?

Beware when the models (GFS here) keep pushing back the arrival of the winter weather. I always remind everyone to keep a sharp eye on the source region for this cold air. Generally, it comes from near the Pole or over western Canada. Sometimes, the extreme cold lies in Siberia. Cross-Polar flow dri...

Re: December 2017: Christmas Cold / Ice Across Texas?

One of our local mets has our high temp here in SE La. at 80 next Friday. You know, that real Christmas type feel to the air. Disgusting..... Might be three hot Christmases in a row.... It won’t One thing this Christmas won't be is hot. Now, temperatures may approach the upper 70s on Thursday, but ...
