Re: May 2014 Weather Disucussion

Dare I say it, but some things are working in our favor today. If those breaks can scatter out, then maybe there could.......better stop before I jinx it. ;-)

Re: May: Rain Chances Increasing Thursday-Saturday?

I don't get it. It's all either to our west, or off to the east. Look at this morning's radar - the gulf and Louisiana are rockin'. Why do we get caught in the middle, with nothing? How can there be a cap over us when it's raining in all directions? Ugh. I conclude we live in an island of hell.

Re: May: Rain Chances Increasing Thursday-Saturday?

I wish, but I keep watching everything to our SW just fizzle as it moves this way. You can see the dryline retreating already on DFW radar too.

Re: May: Rain Chances Increasing Thursday-Saturday?

True story. I work with a guy who moved here from Chicago, back in November. He's a nice guy, but he likes to crack jokes about our Texas tall tales. Weather is a frequent topic (of course). So this past Monday, the topic of rain this Friday comes up. He couldn't believe the rain may be heavy, and s...

Re: May: Rain Chances Increasing Thursday-Saturday?

Hi Res NAM shows quite a gradient across Harris County. It ranges from .10" in the east to 2" in the NW. The radar composite shows a big blowup to our west, but it just sorta skirts the Houston metro area in each frame. It's SO close....and SO frustrating.

I hope so. The overnight forecast discussion is the most depressing thing I have read since 2011.

Re: May: Rain Chances Increasing Thursday-Saturday?

That's a bummer, because this really is a make-or-break situation for any remaining green-up or hobbling the trees along until the sea breeze starts (if it does this year at all...).

Re: May: Rain Chances Increasing Thursday-Saturday?

That rainfall map should be framed or used as the site banner. Look at that donut right over Houston! You can't make this stuff up.

Re: May: Rain Chances Increasing Thursday-Saturday?

So the HPC shows heavier rains on both sides of us, and we're caught in this wedge of dryness in the middle. What else is new?

Re: May: Rain Chances Increasing Thursday-Saturday?

Did I read this right? Wouldn't we be EAST of the trough axis?

THE GROUP VELOCITY OF THE MAIN UPPER LEVEL TROUGH IS
FORECASTED TO BE SLOWER THAN THE PHASE VELOCITY OF THE INDIVIDUAL
ENERGY THOUGH WHICH WILL KEEP SOUTHEAST TEXAS WEST OF THE TROUGH
AXIS.

Re: May Weather - dry and warmer????

Random thought: I was in Austin 3 weeks ago, and it was greener there than here in H-town. Oh, and the wildflowers/bluebonnets were at their peak along 290 and just amazing.

Re: May Weather - dry and warmer????

I think drought and moisture maps may be behind reality. The NWS and Jeff's emails allude to drying grasses and possible future impacts to trees, etc. I can report that the reality here in Montgomery County is much worse than those maps imply. The pine trees are turning from yellow to now an orange ...

Re: Watching Gene Norman in Birmingham

Jeff, that's exactly what Harold Taft used to do and that's what James Spann did the other night. Harold would get his info from Scott Chesner or David Finfrock (degreed mets too), and it was always - always - always technically and scientifically accurate. Same with James Spann the other night. I t...

Re: Watching Gene Norman in Birmingham

Yes, a PhD from MIT, no less. But I don't think he knew his stuff, for whatever reason. SO many times he'd use the incorrect terminology for things that any knowledgeable amateur could point out. And the Ike coverage....my GAWD what a disservice to the community that was. FWIW I noticed "Dr. Ji...

Re: Watching Gene Norman in Birmingham

Now that he's gone, I can say this. I never could stand him. Sorry. I never cringed so much in my life than when he tag-teamed with Dr. Frank during hurricane Ike. He couldn't even comprehend what an eyewall replacement cycle was and its relation to air pressure. I'm not one to criticize pro-mets, b...
