Re: January 2024

The forecast models are trending more southward in terms of wintry precipitation. I am more concerned about freezing rain as it makes roads dangerous and cause tree to fall on power lines.

Re: January 2024

I’ve heard stories of 73 and 77-78 winters. My father played a football playoff game in heavy snow in 1977. I kinda remember, vaguely, the ‘83 December and I certainly remember ‘85 and ‘89. The 1970s winter were colder. Winter of 1972-1973 and 1977-1978 were El Nino winters. 1977-1978 is one of the...

Re: January 2024

Thanks Gang! You all are awesome!! Thanks for dropping in Srain! Any thoughts on the upcoming week? It's going to get cold and likely stay that way for a while. You folks certainly have a potential freezing rain/sleet event Sunday into early Monday. We know from past experience that models struggle...

I remember that event. There was thunder during the ice storm.

Re: January 2024

I know with past freezing rain events, trees have fallen onto powerlines causing power outages. They often cause roads to be dangerous to travel. I can even recall thunder during freezing rain. If we get ice accumulations on power lines, expect power outages. I am thinking that could happen, which ...

If that was to happen, that would be on par with January 1886 or January 1930 freeze.

Re: January 2024

The 18z GFS has a 1065MB high in NW Canada in 10 days lol that’s bananas. The pattern is attempting to reload. If that happened, that would be on par with January 1962, December 1983, or December 1989 in terms of pressure. World Air Pressure Extremes https://www.glenallenweather.com/historylinks/hi...

Re: January 2024

88 below normal, im not even sure any model run came even close to showing a value like that during the 2021 february outbreak, if the models are still underestimating the cold, this could get really ugly for those northern states Yeah. All-time record lows wouldn’t surprise me in some areas at thi...

That is like December 1821, January 1886 or February 1899 level.

Niño 3.4 1.9ºC
Niño 3 2.0ºC
Niño 1+2 1.0ºC

A really strong high pressure would be something. That would be on par with February 1989 freeze. Alaska recorded the highest air pressure in America.

Re: January 2024

The -AO and -NAO combo isn’t enough to give us anything really cold. I thought that was key to getting us cold??? -EPO is the king of getting cold down here. Need strong ridging over Alaska and the far NW Territories and for that ridge to extend north into the Beaufort Sea. So very true about the E...

Negative Arctic Oscillation (AO) and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) do give cold air.

Re: January 2024

The winter of 1930-1931 did not have freezing temperature. January 1930 had a low of 5°F. 1931 did not see freezing temperature. March 1932 had freezing temperatures and it snowed. 1931 and 2023 are years without freezing temperature recorded. Of course, data from the past should be taken with caut...

Re: January 2024

2023 was an atrocious weather year. 2024 better be way better. The only time that I will side with you and others on this board concerns summer weather — droughts like in 2022 and especially 2023 are useless, I'd much rather have cooler, wetter summers like that from 2021. But freezes are also usel...
