Hurricane Wind Speed Formulas

Here is one formula I found in Bryan Norcross's most recent book, Hurricane Almanac: The Essential Guide to Storms Past, Present, and Future . It is used in Hurricane Re-Analysis. Sustained Wind (MPH) = 9.615 * (1015 - Central Pressure in Millibars) ^ 0.6143 Another formula is: Sustained Wind (MPH) ...

Re: July Weather Discussion

Right. It's just a statistical anomaly created by our use of the calendar and time. A more significant way to look at the heaviest rainfall events would obviously be "event records" (such as Claudette in '79) rather than "daily records" as those are restricted by 12 am to 12 am....

Re: July Weather Discussion

Right, but I'm talking about the wettest days on record. The 10 in. at Hobby fell on two seperate days. 4.88" on the 25th and 5.51" on the 26th in 1979. That would definitely be the greatest two day event on record ;) True, but the Hobby one was during a 24 hour period from Claudette. ;) ...

Rain slowly tapering off across the region this evening. 00z RAOB from CRP shows a PW value of 3.0''! I do not remember ever seeing precip water values that high before. LCH is currently sitting at a dry 2.44'' . The latest RUC mesoanalysis shows PW's in the 2.6-2.8'' range across southeast T...

Re: July Weather Discussion

Wet day today. I haven't seen a day this wet in a while. I know storms are dying in GOM. I think they will redevelop in the night, since it is tropical moisture.

Alex has 948 mb and 100 mph, that's almost in Ike's territory when it was over GOM.

Re: CAT 2 Hurricane Alex. 55 Miles NE of La Pesca. 100 MPH/9

I have seen radar and satellite images of Alex and it looks better than some major hurricanes I have seen. This is really crazy! Keep in mind, recon is only sampling the hurricane. It would not surprise me if Alex is stronger.

Re: CAT 2 Hurricane Alex. 55 Miles NE of La Pesca. 100 MPH/9

Alex likely has unusually low pressure due to developing in the eastern part of the North American Monsoon.

http://www.storm2k.org/phpbb2/viewtopic ... =#p2004478

Wilma formed from a monsoonal trough, which would explain the lower than normal pressure it had.

Re: CAT 2 Hurricane Alex. 55 Miles NE of La Pesca. 100 MPH/9

Alex is quite an impressive hurricane. It looks like a major hurricane to me. 950 mb with 100 mph winds is not unheard of. Remember Ike? It had 944 mb and 100 mph winds. Alex and Ike were large.
