Re: January 2024
I know with past freezing rain events, trees have fallen onto powerlines causing power outages. They often cause roads to be dangerous to travel. I can even recall thunder during freezing rain. Re: January 2024
The 18z GFS has a 1065MB high in NW Canada in 10 days lol that’s bananas. The pattern is attempting to reload. If that happened, that would be on par with January 1962, December 1983, or December 1989 in terms of pressure. World Air Pressure Extremes https://www.glenallenweather.com/historylinks/hi...

Re: January 2024
88 below normal, im not even sure any model run came even close to showing a value like that during the 2021 february outbreak, if the models are still underestimating the cold, this could get really ugly for those northern states Yeah. All-time record lows wouldn’t surprise me in some areas at thi...

Re: Long range model discussion
If the forecast models held up, it would be on par with 1899 and 1962 freeze.

There were tornadoes back in January 2023. I sense deja vu.

Re: January 2024
The -AO and -NAO combo isn’t enough to give us anything really cold. I thought that was key to getting us cold??? -EPO is the king of getting cold down here. Need strong ridging over Alaska and the far NW Territories and for that ridge to extend north into the Beaufort Sea. So very true about the E...

Re: January 2024
The winter of 1930-1931 did not have freezing temperature. January 1930 had a low of 5°F. 1931 did not see freezing temperature. March 1932 had freezing temperatures and it snowed. 1931 and 2023 are years without freezing temperature recorded. Of course, data from the past should be taken with caut...

Re: January 2024
2023 was an atrocious weather year. 2024 better be way better. The only time that I will side with you and others on this board concerns summer weather — droughts like in 2022 and especially 2023 are useless, I'd much rather have cooler, wetter summers like that from 2021. But freezes are also usel...

Arctic Oscillation and Polar Vortex Analysis and Forecasts https://www.aer.com/science-research/climate-weather/arctic-oscillation/ Interesting read. Judah Cohen has a Twitter account and has a forecast for polar vortex to be over the Lower 48 by early January 2024. https://twitter.com/judah47/statu...
