srainhoutx, that satellite photo looks suspiciously tropical. It's not, but it definitely raises the eyebrow.

Re: JUNE 2016 - Heavy Rainfall/Flooding Possible Into Weeken

Unless I am reading it wrong I don't see any of the models showing anything that looks like a core rain event tonight. They are all showing a consistent spin with the rainfall but no concentration around the center. Is this a case of the models not having a full understanding of the situation yet? ...

Re: Sad News

Thank you for all of your kind words. We were fortunate that my sister arrived before her death. She died peacefully in her bed, which is how she wanted it. Mother had been in terrible pain for the last 4 years after breaking her back. I know that she held out just long enough to see my sister befo...

Re: April 2016 - Cut Off Upper Low/Trough/Flood Emergency

Not sure if I've ever seen this, an unbroken chain of TX counties stretching from Uvalde to north of Conroe. Maybe during a tropical storm, but don't ever recall seeing an area that large under flood warning.

Re: March 2016 - Potent Upper Low/Record Flooding Event

This ULL may be unprecedented for this part of the world. "As shown in Figure 7 below, this upper low featured a large 558-decameter contour (the 558 dm, which is 5580 meters, refers to the height at which the atmospheric pressure is 500 mb, or about half of the typical surface pressure). Such ...

Re: February 2016: Warm & Mostly Dry Ahead

We've been very careful over the years to keep politics out of our weather discussions. Let's be mindful of that. There is a reason why we have chosen to keep this Weather Forum strictly weather discussion related. That said one of the best examples I ever heard was presented by Dr. Neil Frank. The...

Re: February 2016: Warm & Mostly Dry Ahead

One more item of note. The anomaly of 2015, especially December, and January 2016's recording breaking global warmth should be a concern to the average citizen, especially if you're under 50 years of age. Still waiting on NOAA's numbers for January, but NASA has January at 1.13 Celcius while Dec was...

Re: February 2016: Warm & Mostly Dry Ahead

Still perplexes me why AGW is controversial. Nobody has proven that CO2 is NOT a heat-trapping gas. For about 150 years, the Greenhouse Effect has been studied. 100 years ago Alexander Graham Bell made this observation, "[The unchecked burning of fossil fuels] would have a sort of greenhouse ef...

Re: February 2016 Will Winter Arrive?

So far at Camp Mabry in Austin we have only had two freezes of 32 and 31 degrees. Hoping for at least one hard freeze for most of central & south Texas toward the end of February to kill off any residual mosquitos.

Re: January 2016: Houston Marathon Weather

It looks like Pali was well below hurricane strength by the time Alex was classified as a hurricane. JTWC had Pali at 70 kts yesterday afternoon though ASCAT indicated no more than 25 kts. Right, but we continue to see anomolous tropical events around the globe during this record-setting El Nino. T...
