I work for a company which has drilling rigs offshore all over the world, including the Gulf of Mexico. One of our employees recently sent in some photos of sea fog at one of our rigs located approx. 100 miles SE of New Orleans. As I understand it, sea fog in this region of the gulf is not a normal occurrence. Would this have anything to do with the unusually harsh winter we're experiencing this year including in the SE USA? My theory is that a combination of prolonged colder than normal air temperatures combined with elevated amounts of cold water feeding the gulf from the Mississippi would drop sea water temps in the region lower than normal, setting the stage for warmer air moving over the gulf to create conditions favorable to sea fog formation. Does this theory hold any water (no pun intended!)
