suprdav2 wrote: Sun Dec 18, 2022 4:55 pm Wife and I are supposed to fly out to Charlotte on Christmas day, then drive to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge on the 26th until the 29th for our 25th anniversary. Do you think we should cancel due to the weather, or should we be ok? Our main concern is driving across the Smokies on the 26th.
You folks should be just fine. It's going to be cold, but currently no precipitation in our local forecast for the 26th. North Carolina DOT does a remarkable job keeping I-40 open. There is some construction on I-40 near the Tennessee State Line in the Pigeon Gorge, but delays are nothing like the Houston metro area. Enjoy your trip and Happy Anniversary!
Thanks, Steve!!
My pleasure! You folks will be driving right past me. Enjoy Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. Wave as you pass Maggie Valley on I-40.

Yeah but 121 pages for December 2022 is awsome.

A 1067 millibar high pressure would produce very cold air. That would exceed January 1962, December 1983, or December 1989! I would not be surprised if there were higher pressure in February 1895 and February 1899.

I’m very fascinated by 1895 and 1899. That seems to be the benchmark for winter in our area.

Pre-frontal. One thing that we will have to watch for is "flash freezing" of leftover water on elevated surfaces with temperatures almost immediately crashing into the 20s behind the front. This is probably the strongest cold front I've ever seen in my 16 years of doing meteorology. Pretty incredible. Take it in. You may or may not see it again.

Feb 2021 was a stair step down. It was a series of arctic fronts that pushed our temps down. I've never seen temps crash this hard, this quick behind the front. It could be near 60 degrees in Dallas while Fort Worth is in the mid 20s. Insane.

Am I really seeing a 1069 MB HP on the 0z GFS? That is just jaw dropping.

The GEM keeps us below freezing from Thursday afternoon to Sunday afternoon with multiple nights in the low teens. Could it be on to something? It handled Feb 2021 better than any other model. I really wish the NAM was within range. Ugh!
