Yeah, it's going to suck. Back on the roller coaster. I miss the winters decades ago where we would see mid-upper 50s and occasional 60s for days and weeks. Ideal for walking the dog and running. No 60-70°F dewpoints.

On a side note, no such thing as wasted cold. This state sucks, weather wise, 6 months out of the year.
Cold blasts like this one are rare.
This will likely be the 3rd coldest night in CLL in 30 years and the coldest without snow cover.

5°F - 2021
9°F - 2021
14°F - about 2016? I'd have to look it up. Nights below 20°F in CLL are Rare, indeed. It's often a couple of degrees colder in Conroe and MoCo than here.
The lowest temperature recorded at College Station is -3°F on January 31, 1949. The second coldest recorded reached a low of 0°F on January 17, 1930. The coldest December is 2°F on December 23, 1989.

Houston reached a low of 14°F on January 31, 1949, which is a sharp contrast from College Station. Houston has never recorded sub zero temperature. It is certainly possible that Houston reached sub zero in the past.

Morons in charge of our community water well did not protect the equipment in 2021, so nobody had water for 3 days. They did not learn their lesson and were surprised when asked about cold weather protection before this cold snap. Naturally, the well froze again and nobody has water.

I thought WE had everything completed for this freeze, based on lessons learned and prep in 2021. Unfortunately, we forgot to cover the eve vents along the west side of the house (the side where the kitchen is) and woke up this morning to no water in the kitchen. Been blowing hot air into the kitchen sink cabinet and putting a hair dryer on the pipes that come out of the wall in hopes of melting stuff, but so far, no luck. I'm thinking it froze right where the pipes turn from the attic into the wall, since I can see that's about all that's uncovered in the attic. Both hot and cold pipes are covered in the attic, and the FLIR camera shows mid-50's temps on the gaps in the insulation.

Fingers crossed that letting the kitchen faucet drip a bit, but not enough, overnight will reduce any pipe damage.

Cro, CTD, man that sux.

It's kind of luck of the draw how the pipes are set in the wall and the design of the house. Our NG hotwater heater (heat generator) and pipe inlet from underground and the slab is in the corner of the garage, next to a refrigerator (another heat source) and the laundry room (mega heat source) is on the other side. Our kids have been constantly doing laundry (actually encouraged last night). I've had a space heater in the garage, pointing toward the hot water heater and outside wall with the attic door open. I run a little stream, just over a drip in all the faucets. So the garage stayed well above freezing and the wall didn't feel cold.

I'm not sure about the insulation in the wall, but fingers crossed - so far, so good.

When I've gotten crushed by broken pipes in the slab is in the summer, where settling has broken a couple of pipes in the past and soaked the carpet. Since it doesn't rain much to not at all in our summer climo and CC, the drying ground settles around the slab. Running the sprinklers isn't enough to completely stop the house from settling. A major pain, and costly, even through the plumbers just cut the old line and bypass through the attic with PEX tubing.

Not to mention the cost of running the A/C. So, summers dig far deeper into our pockets!

Only made it to 30 today in Beaumont. Crazy how that felt so much warmer than the 17 I woke up to. Tinkering with 29 now and down hill we go back to our forecast of 19 tonight. Crazy Christmas shopping today and seeing all the left over rain puddles frozen over or looking like a slushy mess. Hopefully many of us will get through this with no major problems. All my plants are gone but Ill take that any day than frozen pipes. Good luck tonight!!

Yeah, the sun and upper 20s is not bad. Tomorrow will feel like short sleeve weather! ...and in just a few more days it will be short sleeve weather again! lol

Styrofoam outdoor faucet covers are secured, heater in the garage, faucets on stun (dripping). Kirk out!

Guess the warmup is done. Thought a couple ticks above freezing were on tap, but it stopped right at 32 and already going back down a couple degrees.

Checking in from the Smoky Mountains. I just got a dusting of snow early this morning when the front blew through. Temperature dropped from 34 at 2 AM to 9 at day break. Temperature struggled to 13 and now has dropped to 4 at 6 PM EST. We definitely will be well below zero in the morning!

I went outside this morning it said 15. But, it felt more like 30. Maybe because it was dry? I was expecting it to feel much colder. I only had a light jacket on and was comfy.

Hit 33, barely. Can’t wait for those 70’s next week. I’ll be outside, grilling again.

Barely got to 30°F today, but it was nice in the sunshine. It's down to 24°F now. The wind has really died down, so it's quite tolerable out.

In my opinion the 70’s can go away till March along with 60’s for lows.

They won’t last long. I have a gut feeling this will be a winter to remember.

WxMan and myself are currently flying-in reinforcements for our northern wall. This was enough for one season. Must be taller.
