Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Houston/Galveston TX

...New SHORT TERM, LONG TERM, MARINE...

.SHORT TERM...
(This evening through Wednesday Night)
Issued at 251 PM CST Tue Jan 24 2023

A line of strong to severe thunderstorms has pushed southwest of
the Houston Metro area this afternoon. Multiple reports of wind,
hail, tornado damage as well as street/coastal flooding have been
received across our CWA. Areas along the Gulf Coast (northwest of
Matagorda Bay) should be wary of these storms until it clears our
area. Once it does, windy conditions should linger behind the
front, slowly diminishing thereafter into Wednesday. Benign
weather should be the main story mid week onwards with highs in
the 50s and lows in the 30s/40s.

Stay weather aware until these storms clear. If you are under a
warning, take shelter immediately. Avoid driving through flooded
roadways.

Plans are underway to survey the damage from this storm system.
Please send any storm reports to our office ASAP.

.LONG TERM...
(Thursday through next Monday)
Issued at 251 PM CST Tue Jan 24 2023

Little in the way of chances for the long term. High pressure
and clear skies should dominate through the end of the week with
highs in the 50s/60s and lows in the 30s/40s. Surface high
pressure pushes east into the Mississippi River Valley over the
weekend, ushering in onshore flow, rising temperatures and moisture
return ahead of our next storm system/cold front progged to
arrive on Sunday.

.AVIATION...
(18Z TAF Issuance)
Issued at 1123 AM CST Tue Jan 24 2023

Strong cold front is pushing through the region today. Low MVFR /
IFR cigs with locally IFR cigs will continue through the
afternoon. The primary concern will be strong to severe
thunderstorms capable of strong damaging winds, hail, and even
isolated tornadoes. Visibility could drop to 1SM, or lower, during
times of heavy rainfall. Ambient winds will be strong out of the
SE ahead of the front. TS/RA chances will decrease quickly after
~21-22Z in the front`s wake. NW winds 15-20 knots with higher
gusts expected tonight. Cigs are expected to remain MVFR through
tomorrow morning north of I-10. Areas south of I-10 may experience
a period of VFR cigs this evening and tonight before MVFR cigs
return tomorrow morning.

&&

.MARINE...
Issued at 251 PM CST Tue Jan 24 2023

Strong winds and high seas are currently ongoing across the SE
Texas Gulf waters. Freeport buoy is reporting sustained Gale-Force
winds offshore with wave heights nearing 11 feet. A cold front is
in the process of pushing offshore right now, so expect these
winds to shift from southerly to northwesterly, with speeds in the
range of 30-40 knots and gusts nearing 50 knots. Strong to severe
storms associated with this cold front may bring even higher
winds and seas. Winds should be slow to diminishing behind the
front with seas around 10-13 feet expected late tonight into the
early morning hours of Wednesday.

Caution flags and advisories will likely be needed on
Wednesday/early Thursday to allow conditions to subside. Onshore
flow returns Friday, with increasing winds and seas into the
weekend ahead of the next weather system.

So far on Twitter I've seen a nursing home with major damage off Center St. in Deer Park, houses with missing or heavily damaged roofs in Sagemont, southern Pasadena, and Deer Park, at least one of those cheaply built metal shack industrial businesses (reportedly unoccupied) flattened in the Fairmont Pky/Mickey Gilley Rd area, and a lot of down or leaning power poles & insulation/building debris along various roads. Unconfirmed report it went over Pasadena Memorial High School but everyone is ok there.

Channel 13 coverage sucks, they're losing every live shot because apparently they cheaped out and are only relying on local cell service, unlike 11 and 2. Maybe should upgrade back to sat trucks instead of Cricket.

Channel 13 is basically the only news channel that I watch. Never had any issues with them.

Heartbreaking to see people’s homes like that.

I picked up 4.10”

Approximately the 6th or 7th biggest rain I’ve seen since moving here in 2005.

The worst thing is just how widespread the damage is,it isn't just a few blocks. This church roof and walls almost completely collapsed, and there are many homes with similar damage.May have been even a EF3.

I honestly thought there would be more tornadoes across the area today but it seems as if that one tornado made up for the lack of others. I’ve still yet to see a tornado in my life.
