It has been 30 years ago that Hurricane Allen menaced the Atlantic Ocean as a Category 5 hurricane. It did not make landfall until it reached Texas. Allen maintained Category 5 status for a long time, one of the longest in the Atlantic. It had a central pressure of 899 millibars and 190 mph winds, one of the lowest recorded besides Wilma, Gilbert, and 1935 Labor Day. The maximum sustained winds beats Gilbert and Wilma. Believe it or not, Allen had a central pressure of 932 millibars and 180 mph winds. Must of been in an area of really high ambient pressure. Allen was a very large hurricane. Also, it was quite large like Gilbert, Carla, Katrina, and Ike. It had a pressure of 909 millibars before it hit Texas as a Category 3 hurricane. Think about Allen hitting Texas as a Category 5? :o
