I remember goose hunting in weather like this in eagle lake as a youngster. That was 45 years ago but I distinctly remember more of this type of cold back then. Good memories!

16.5°F here.

Temperatures have tanked over 30°F in the RG Valley in the last few hours. Think about that!

Wheew it’s cold! The wind is brutal.. my station is showing 19F with a wind chill of 5. Strong 20+mph winds with gusts to 34mph. Wouldn’t be surprised if it gets down to 9 or 10 tonight when all said and done. My dew point is 10

15.5°F IMBY. 4°F DP. Windchill of -2°F.

Inside faucets dripping. Outside faucets covered. Garage being heated with a space heater. Attic door open to the garage...it's probably 50°F in the garage. I slowly boil water to keep things from getting too dry inside the house.

HRRR is betting on 13°F for the low. CMC is sticking to 10°F.

Looks like 13°F was the magic number after all IMBY. Could have been 12·F before I woke up.

All we needed was a snowpack for single digits.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Houston/Galveston TX
455 AM CST Fri Dec 23 2022

...New AVIATION...

.SHORT TERM...
(Today through Saturday Night)
Issued at 335 AM CST Fri Dec 23 2022

Welcome to the Arctic! Ok, maybe not the Arctic but it is frigid
outside. Temperatures this morning are mostly in the teens. Only a
few spots along the coast remain above 20F. The real story has been
the wind chills which have generally ranged from a few degrees below
zero to the upper single digits. The good news is that today will
feature bright Texas sunshine and weakening CAA. The bad news is
that it may not be enough for us to rise above freezing. Therefore,
most of the CWA will experience 36-44 hours of subfreezing
temperatures. Northern most counties potentially longer. Best chance
of rising above freezing today will be over our southern counties,
especially near the coast. Our forecast temperatures today closely
align with the HRRR which has performed well during this event. The
HRRR keeps all but the immediate coast below freezing today.
Remembering to protect the "4 Ps" (People, Pets, Pipes, and Plants)
is a must!

Another area wide hard freeze is expected tonight with lows
generally in the mid teens to low 20s. However, we may see increased
high level clouds during the overnight hours as a weak upper trough
pushes through the region. UL clouds moving into N Texas are already
evident on water vapor imagery. Global and mesoscale models depict
rising 500mb and 700mb RH values. With enough overcast, lows could
be warmer than currently predicted. But even if the overcast keeps
lows a few degrees warmer than expected, it would still equate to a
hard freeze for most locations.

Saturday will likely be the coldest Christmas Eve in over 30 years!
After the morning`s hard freeze, highs are expected to struggle to
reach 40F. The current model blend used for our Christmas Eve
temperature grids shows most areas north of I-10 remaining in the
30s while areas farther south manage to reach 40-41F. Temps
Christmas Eve night are expected to fall into the 20s as Arctic air
remains entrenched over southeast Texas.

.LONG TERM...
(Christmas through Thursday)
Issued at 335 AM CST Fri Dec 23 2022

Surface high pressure will remain over Texas through at least
Tuesday bringing most clear skies, dry conditions, and cool
temperatures. By daybreak on Christmas, temperatures will still be
in the 20s, so may want to replace the milk with some hot cocoa
for Santa. High temperatures will struggle to get out of the mid
40s on Christmas with lows Sunday night in the mid to upper 20s
for everywhere by the coast which will get down into the mid 30s.
A gradual warming trend is expected Monday and Tuesday, but still
remaining on the cooler side with highs on Monday in the mid 50s
and then near 60 on Tuesday.

After Tuesday, that high pressure shift eastwards into the
Mid-Atlantic inducing a southerly flow into our region which will
increase temperatures and moisture. High temperatures on Wednesday
will be near 70, and then near 75 on Thursday. A surface low
pressure system developing in the Central Plains combined with the
WAA across SE Texas will bring scattered showers and potentially
isolated thunderstorms Wednesday night and through the day on
Thursday.
