HGX Update...

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HOUSTON/GALVESTON TX
343 PM CST TUE FEB 23 2010

.DISCUSSION...
SNOW IS FINALLY GETTING GOING OVER THE NORTHWESTERN COUNTIES WITH
PLENTY OF RAIN AND A FEW SLEET REPORTS SOUTHWARD. WINDS HAVE BEEN
PICKING UP AS WELL AND TEMPERATURES AT 3 PM WERE 32-34 DEGREES
FROM BELLVILLE TO HUNTSVILLE TO NACOGDOCHES...AND 36-46 SOUTHWARD.
RADAR HAS BEEN BRIGHT BANDING AND THESE AREAS HAVE BEEN REPORTING
THE SLEET. CURRENTLY THE BEST LOOKING SLEETBURST IS MOVING INTO
SAN JAC/POLK/NRN LIBERTY COUNTIES.

WINTER STORM WARNING/ADVISORY STILL LOOKS TO BE ON TRACK SO NO
CHANGES. STILL EXPECTING 2 TO 2+ INCHES OF ACCUMULATION OF SNOW
ON GRASSY SURFACES IN THE WARNED AREA AND THE 3-4 INCH AMOUNTS
SHOULD BE IN A WEDGE FROM CALDWELL TO COLLEGE STATION TO GROVETON
NORTHWARD WITH ACCUMULATIONS ON ROADS. CAN NOT RULE OUT A FEW
SPOTS IN HOUSTON COUNTY GETTING 5-6 INCHES. THE ADVISORY AREAS
WILL BE LIMITED IN ACCUMULATIONS DUE TO THE WARM GROUND AND WARMER
PROFILES AND THE LIMITED DURATION OF PRECIP IN COMPARISON TO THE
NORTH. PLENTY OF RAIN AND SLEET SHOULD BE GOING ON THIS
AFTERNOON/EVENING ALONG AND NORTH OF THE HIGHWAY 59 CORRIDOR
BEFORE THE CHANGE OVER TO RA/SN THEN SN. STILL LOOKS AS THOUGH THE
EVENT SHOULD OVER AND OUT OF HERE BY 3 AM. STILL WILL HAVE THE
ISSUE OF FREEZING TEMPERATURES FOR THE AREA NORTH OF A COLUMBUS TO
SEALY TO KATY TO TOMBALL TO WOODLANDS TO CLEVELAND AND THE
POSSIBILITY OF ICY ROADS AND BRIDGES BUT WITH THE RAPIDLY CLEARING
SKIES EXPECTING A QUICK WARM UP ACROSS THE ADVISORY AREA THOUGH
THE SNOW COVER COULD EASILY HAMPER THE WARMUP IN THE WARNING AREA.

NEXT WEATHER SYSTEM SHOULD SWING INTO THE AREA FRIDAY MORNING AND
AFTERNOON. MOISTURE RETURN WON`T BE GREAT BUT ENOUGH FOR
RAIN/SHRA. SATURDAY IS SHAPING UP TO BE A PLEASANT DAY WITH RETURN
FLOW SETTING UP LEADING TO RAIN CHANCES GOING UP FOR SUNDAY
AFTERNOON AND THEN (AND ECMWF/GFS DIFFER A GOOD DEAL ON THIS
SCENARIO SO CONFIDENCE IS VERY LOW IN EITHER SOLUTION) AND THEN
PEAKING RAIN CHANCES OVERNIGHT SUNDAY/MONDAY MORNING WITH THE
SURFACE LOW SE OF GLS AND MOVING EAST QUICKLY. WRAP AROUND
MOISTURE AND COOL TEMPERATURES SHOULD KEEP THINGS A COLD
RAIN.

HAVE BEEN GETTING REPORTS OF SNOW NOW IN LIVINGSTON AND HUNTSVILLE
1T 330 PM.

OK, maybe not that bad. Still water in Galleria area rooftop parking.

It just let up (I promise) but am seeing intermittent flakes again.

Looks like central Montgomery County is in a dry slot per my personal observation and radar. I hope y'all are right about the radar filling in because I just don't see anything that would bring me heavy snow for accumulations of any sort. Hope I'm wrong of course.

Is it me or does it look like there is no much precipitation to the south of us? Or is more supposed to build in later? :?

Maybe someone can answer this: just an observation, but based solely on the radar animations, it looks as if the main energy of the gulf low seems to be concentrated in and around Houston area. It appears that there are storms forming to the SW near Goliad, but the line seems to be moving East at a good clip. There does appear to be some training and development, but the line is shifting east pretty quick (relative to the cold air surging down).

My question is, could the bulk of the energy move past the Houston area before the colder air over rides? The snow/sleet line appears to be on the I10 corridor and slowly moving south, but the gulf energy seems to moving east faster than it's moving south. Just an observation ....

290/Gessner - light, drizzly rain. That's about it. But, the temperature has dropped about 3 degrees in the last hour - down to 38.

I'm hoping I get to enjoy it when I get home in Katy. Will be fun to see my dogs playing it. Hopefully. :D

I hope Tyler is right about the lift, because at this point I personally think the amount of moisture will be the problem. I don't really see any more building from what has already built and places around Houston might not see much snow. I hope I am wrong but I don't see much more back-building.
