Thunderstorms that happen in the middle of the night, while you are asleep. It seems like when I was a kid, it happened more often. It can happen anytime of the year, but it seems to most likely happen in the spring and fall. It does not happen as much in winter and summer. Typically, it is due to a cold front, mostly in spring and fall. Summer nighttime thunderstorms happen due to either low pressure systems, a persistent sea breeze storm that somehow gets stronger overnight due to outflow boundries, an occasional cold front, and tropical cyclone remnants. I remember one nighttime thunderstorm in August of 2004, after a cold front passed. It was clear and suddenly a thunderstorm formed and dumped heavy rain. It was a small one.
