Short fused Flash Flood Watch issued for this morning to cover this ongoing overnight event. Be careful on the morning commute. Multiple flooded roads are being reported.

...FLASH FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 AM CDT THIS MORNING...

The National Weather Service in Houston/Galveston has issued a

* Flash Flood Watch for a portion of southeast Texas...including
the following counties...Brazoria...Chambers...Fort Bend...
Galveston...Harris...Liberty and Wharton.

* Until 8 AM CDT this morning

* A mesoscale convective vortex (MCV) is producing heavy rainfall
across much of Southeast Texas this morning. Over 6 inches of
rainfall have already fallen across portions of Harris County,
with additional steady moderate to heavy rainfall expected
through the rest of the morning. A developing line of showers
and thunderstorms extending to the west into Central Texas will
swing around through the watch area this morning, creating the
potential for additional flash flooding across the watch area.
The watch may need to be extended depending on the evolution of
this system through the next several hours.

* Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to
cross safely. Vehicles caught in rising water should be
abandoned quickly. If your vehicle stalls...abandon it and seek
higher ground immediately. Rapidly rising water may engulf your
vehicle and its occupants and sweep them away. Move to higher
ground.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.

Very heavy rainfall area wide overnight has caused numerous areas of street and bayou flooding. A swath of 5 to nearly 7 inches of rainfall have fallen from the Katy to the Jersey Village areas. If you don't need to venture out it's best to stay put until these floodwaters recede.

Numerous Flash Flood Watches, Warnings and Advisories continue in effect this morning.

The phrase for the Houston metro rush hour this morning……….”Turn around don’t drown”.

The mesoscale convective vortex (MCV) ignited very heavy rains late yesterday evening that have continued overnight and continue this morning with some areas receiving over 8” of rain. Flash Flood Warnings continue for the Houston metro area as the rains begin to slowly decrease. Additional rain may re-develop later this afternoon as the MCV drifts across the area.

Thanks djjordan for the overnight updates. Tuesday morning briefing from Jeff:

Excessive rainfall and flash flood event has impacted Waller, Fort Bend and Harris Counties overnight.

Widespread street flooding continues over large areas of western and northern Harris County into Waller and Fort Bend Counties.

Rainfall amounts averaged 5-6.5 inches in the last 6 hours from Jersey Village to Katy with a wider area of 3-4 inches from Kingwood to Sugar Land to Waller.

Numerous creeks and bayous are very high with a few having exceeded their banks:

Greens Bayou at US 59

Brickhouse Gully at Costa Rica

South Mayde Creek at Greenhouse

Keegans Bayou at Roark

Halls Bayou at Airline

Rummel Creek at Brittmore

Mid level system responsible for the overnight rainfall is centered near Hempstead and continues to spin, but rainfall intensity has been gradually subsiding with the main band located just SE of this feature. There has been some continued moderate rainfall across northern Fort Bend County, but this rainfall has not progressed much into Harris County. Until the mid level system moves east of our area the threat for additional heavy rainfall will remain in the forecast, but not expecting as organized as overnight.

For the next few hours residents from Jersey Village to Katy should remain in place and only travel if absolutely needed.

The pattern screamed heavy rain yesterday evening looking at the low spinning and building convection. The NWS extended the watch through Wed morning due to the low hanging around one more day and night with daytime heating and nighttime convergence setting off more storms later possibly.

I heard a forecaster say that the low was going to drift back over town and we are due to get more heavy rain. I just wanted to see if that's the general consensus here?

thanks.

At noon, Brooks said the Low was east of Conroe, but there's no breeze or High pressure to push it anywhere. So, it's just drifting. The HRRR showed the east side getting it, tomorrow.

Probably the better answer is 'stay tuned,' because it's a fluid situation (no pun intended).

MESOSCALE PRECIPITATION DISCUSSION 0654...CORRECTED
NWS WEATHER PREDICTION CENTER COLLEGE PARK MD
224 PM EDT TUE AUG 08 2017

CORRECTED FOR AREAS AFFECTED IN HEADER AND SUMMARY SECTION

AREAS AFFECTED...SERN TX INTO WRN LA

CONCERNING...HEAVY RAINFALL...FLASH FLOODING POSSIBLE

VALID 081820Z - 090020Z

SUMMARY...SLOW MOVING CONVECTION WITH RAINFALL RATES CAPABLE OF 3
IN/HR IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP OVER PORTIONS OF SERN TX INTO WRN LA
THIS AFTERNOON. GIVEN WET ANTECEDENT CONDITIONS...FLASH FLOODING
WILL BE POSSIBLE.

DISCUSSION...A SLOW MOVING MCV WAS NOTED ALONG THE
HARRIS/MONTGOMERY COUNTY BORDER AT 18Z VIA EXPERIMENTAL GOES 16
VISIBLE IMAGERY. OVERCAST SKIES DIRECTLY BENEATH THE CIRCULATION
HAVE BEEN LIMITING SOLAR INSOLATION AND INSTABILITY BUT SOME
BREAKS IN CLOUD COVER TO THE EAST TOWARD THE SABINE RIVER HAVE
HELPED MLCAPE TO REACH 500-1500 J/KG ACCORDING TO 17Z DATA FROM
THE SPC MESOANALYSIS PAGE. GIVEN ABUNDANT MOISTURE...GPS
PRECIPITABLE WATER VALUES OF 2.2 TO 2.4 INCHES...AND WET BULB ZERO
HEIGHTS OF 15-16 KFT...PER 12Z LCH SOUNDING AND RAP ANALYSIS
SOUNDINGS OVER SERN TX...THE ENVIRONMENT IS POISED TO PRODUCE VERY
HEAVY RAINFALL DOMINATED BY WARM RAIN PROCESSES.

850 MB WINDS ON THE SOUTHEAST SIDE OF THE MCV HAVE WEAKENED FROM
EARLIER THIS MORNING TO ABOUT 20 KT PER RECENT VAD WIND DATA FROM
KIAH AND RAP ANALYSES...RESULTING IN WEAKER AVAILABLE INFLOW INTO
CONVECTION...BUT GIVEN TRENDS IN VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGERY AND AN
UNCAPPED ATMOSPHERE...DAYTIME HEATING SHOULD HELP TO INCREASE
CONVECTIVE COVERAGE IN THE VICINITY OF THE MCV AND ALONG A LOW
LEVEL CONVERGENCE AXIS/FRONTAL BOUNDARY EXTENDING NORTHEAST FROM
THE MCV INTO N-CNTRL LA.

THE EXPECTATION IS FOR CONVECTION TO INCREASE OVER PORTIONS OF
SERN TX...EAST/NORTHEAST OF THE MCV AND NEAR THE LOW LEVEL
CONVERGENCE AXIS OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS. LOW TO MID-LEVEL WINDS
OF 10 KT OR LESS SHOULD ENSURE SLOW MOVEMENT TO CONVECTION ALONG
WITH ELEMENTS OF TRAINING. IT IS UNCERTAIN IF ENOUGH INSTABILITY
CAN GROW NEAR THE MCV CENTER THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE
AFTERNOON...BUT GIVEN RECENT HEAVY RAINFALL...OVER 5 INCHES IN
PORTIONS OF HARRIS AND FORT BEND COUNTIES OVER THE PAST 24
HOURS...SOME LOCATIONS IN SERN TEXAS ARE HIGHLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO
FLASH FLOOD CONCERNS FROM ADDITIONAL RAINFALL.

Looks like the center has shifted a bit east towards Livingston now, so maybe we will be spared the heaviest rainfall, at least for now. Question is where does the MCV drift overnight? Does it keep moving slowly to the east, sparing the Houston area, or will it retrograde back to the west.

Update: NWS says it will drift SE and then Northward overnight.
