Looks like rainfall intensity is beginning to lessen greatly over the hardest hit areas... Hopefully we can see a bit of a lull this evening. We will have to watch for redevelopment overnight along a boundary which looks to be situated along the Hwy 59 corridor at the moment

Streets are all flooded in my neighborhood....this is only the 3rd time I have seen this over the past 15 years. We have gotten about 3'' of rain over the past hour to hour and a half and more rain continues to train up out of northern Ft. Bend county.

Hope you don't mind a bit off topic.. Going to Austin tomorrow....does anyone know how the rivers are ( Pedernales or Guadelupe) ? The flash flood sign always scares me at Perdernales!

Thanks for any replies!

Rainfall has been much less to our NW, so everything around that region is ok, as of now...

IAH has recieved 5.28" of rain so far today (as of 6 pm).

This is more rain than all of last month's total (3.75") and also more than March and April combined (4.69")

We are now just under 1 in. below the normal amount for the YTD.

Just saw that the wettest July day on record is 5.4" on the 13th in 2002. We are oh so close!

2nd wettest day is 5.22" on the 27th in 1943. We have already passed that.

Also, the wettest July day on record at Hobby is 7.07" on the 7th in 1973. They are in no danger of breaking that record today, as they have only recieved 4.89" of rain today and the heaviest rain is now out of that area.

Officially. ;) July also had Tropical Storm Claudette in 1979. Hobby had 10 inches from Claudette, while Alvin had 45 inches.

Right, but I'm talking about the wettest days on record. The 10 in. at Hobby fell on two seperate days. 4.88" on the 25th and 5.51" on the 26th in 1979.

That would definitely be the greatest two day event on record ;)

True, but the Hobby one was during a 24 hour period from Claudette. ;) You raise a good point. Today is the heaviest rain in one calendar day unlike in 1979 at Hobby.

Right. It's just a statistical anomaly created by our use of the calendar and time. A more significant way to look at the heaviest rainfall events would obviously be "event records" (such as Claudette in '79) rather than "daily records" as those are restricted by 12 am to 12 am...

IAH has 5.37" through 7 pm. We only need 0.03" to tie the record daily rainfall for IAH for the month of July...

Light to moderate rain is still falling over the airport, but the rain is almost about to move out of the area. It will be close....

As for the resident statistical specialist, I prefer 24 hours for record and statistical purposes.
