Damaging Storms Thursday Chicago to Little Rock, Memphis

The risk of dangerous and damaging thunderstorms will continue Thursday from Chicago and Indianapolis to Dallas, Little Rock and Shreveport.
The storms will organize along an advancing cold front pushing eastward from the Plains and swinging into the Mississippi and Ohio valleys to near the upper Gulf Coast.
The most widespread characteristic of the storms will be strong wind gusts. Some communities will be hit with downed trees and power outages.





However, a few of the strongest storms can bring a brief tornado.

There is a chance that this tornado threat focuses over an zone from Chicago and northern Illinois to the tri-state area of Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee. The risk could materialize if discrete thunderstorms form ahead of an anticipated squall line.

Other traits of the storms will be hail and brief heavy rainfall that can bring flash and urban flooding.



The zone of strong to severe thunderstorms will cause slow travel on the highways and can lead to substantial flight delays in the region, rippling to other portions of the nation well outside of the severe weather threat area.




During Thursday, this area will reach from portions of Missouri to southern Wisconsin but will shift eastward across the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and northern portions of Indiana, Ohio and southwestern Ontario Thursday night.

During Friday, the risk of strong to severe thunderstorms will reach the eastern Great Lakes and the Appalachians. By Friday night, the remnants of the storms will reach the Atlantic Seaboard with localized downpours, gusty winds and travel delays at the very least.

Powerful late season cold front currently extends from east of Dallas to Waco to just west of Austin.

Strong cold front is moving SE at 30-40mph and should reach our NW counties by 900-1000am. Line of strong thunderstorms is found along the boundary north of Waco with a line of showers and weaker storms extending south of Waco to SW of Austin. Overnight soundings continue to show strong capping in place over SE TX with moisture trapped below this inversion in the mid-levels. The abundance of low level moisture is resulting in widespread very light rain and drizzle across the area. Strong front will cross the area today with showers and thunderstorms developing along and behind the boundary. Severe threat will be limited to our far NE counties…from Lake Livingston northward as capping looks to hold for the most part across the rest of the area.

Bigger impact will be a significant drop in temperatures as the front passes from the warm and muggy upper 70’s quickly into the 50’s under strong NW winds. This front will be similar to the front last Wednesday with respect to the temperature drop. Clouds clear on Friday, but cold surface high pressure will only allow warming into the 60’s even with strong April sun.

Record cold low temperatures will be possible on Saturday morning as clear skies and light winds allow excellent cooling conditions. Lows will likely range from the upper 30’s to lower 40’s across the region which is 20-25 degrees below normal for this time of year.

No, we're not. We'll be lucky to even get a decent rain.

Winter wasn't bad. My lowest temp was about 30. Only a handful of light freezes.

It was spring that sucked so bad (and continues...).

Almost a 20F temp drop expected behind that front. Winds gusting to near 30 to 35 mph out of the NW in College Station at this hour.

Is the front slowing-down just a tad? I see more sun a little to the east of us...if we could just scour out the low clouds a bit more...

This looks a lot like the storm we had April 10th and 11th where the front came through in the afternoon hours as just a drizzle just to have all hell break loose at 10:00pm throughout the night.

Any chance of that same scenario happening again tonight?

At this time I see no disturbances upstream or back to the W and the radar as well as satellite imagery suggests this should be about it for this system.

Just wait until August when we have temperatures nearing 100 ( Yeah, I know Wxman 57 loves that...LOL), You will be wishing for what we have now...

I won't be, I love the heat. Bring on the 100+ stuff. Being born and raised in TX puts the love for warmth in your blood. Much easier to play outdoors and get natural vit D

That is fine. I was raised in Texas. Texas City, Texas is the place of my birth. As a runner, I do like the cold. The heat just wears me out and by August I am nearly exhausted. We do agree to disagree. Trust me, you will get your warmth. Even the coldest Summers we have experienced (1976 comes to mind) had warm days to them.

I could not imagine a more miserable Spring to have than what we're experiencing now.
April 20th and I'm wearing warm ups. Should be wearing shorts.

1976 had one 100 degree day on August 7, 1976. There have been summers without 100 degree days. That last happened in 1997.
