10-12 days ago, that was the outlook for this past week. Ridge breaking down and daily showers through yesterday. We did get some storms on the 5th-6th when the temp hit 105. 12z GFS does have a hurricane developing in the Gulf and heading generally this way on the 29th. Yeah, I believe it!
"THE WEEK IS STARTING OUT HOT WITH LITTLE/NO RAIN. THE WEEK WILL END HOT WITH LITTLE/NO RAIN. ISOLATED SHOWER/THUNDERSTORM DEVELOPMENT CANNOT TOTALLY BE RULED OUT...SO CONSIDER YOURSELF LUCKY IF YOU GET WET DURING THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS"
Don't know if their is a correlation because of the extent of the drought, but we are having black bear sightings in the north side of town here in Del Rio, 3 sightings in the last couple of days. I think perhaps they are getting hungry. It has been so bad here, that we never had the spring bloom. Have not had to cut the grass this year and watering is pointless. Only thing that can save us now is tropical activity. No rain for at least the next week and nothing in sight at the moment.
Hot and dry with near record heat appears to be the theme for the remainder of the week into early next week. The models continue to advertise the relaxing of the Upper Ridge in the longer range and even a hint of tropical mischief in the Bay of Campeche near the later part of June that we've been discussing in our Hurricane Central sub forum.

Yep. My wife is from Del Rio and she went down last week to see her mom ... told me the same thing. Didn't hear about the black bears though. Wow, that is crazy!
Hey everyone - the situation is getting extremely dire for us. The trees up here north of town are in a desperate situation. There are whole stands of pines now that have turned brown and are dying off. I've also seen a large number of oaks, especially white oaks, that are also turning completely brown. At the front of my neighborhood there is a tree buffer between some houses and Rayford road. The entire buffer (mostly pines with a few oaks) has now turned brown. I'm afraid the whole section will need to be chopped down.
Un-irrigated shrubs are toast too.
I think it's even worse than what the media is reporting. There was an article a couple of days ago in the Chron describing how trees in the Memorial Park area are starting to show signs of stress. It's much worse than that. There are many many trees in Memorial park that are already well past the point of no return.
I'm really concerned that if we don't get some meaningful rain soon, this plus the beetle infestation later this summer will kill off such an enormous amount of trees it will permanently alter the landscape for many years. It's a very sad, helpless feeling to see this happen.

TXDOT Sign on the roadways (I45 South going to Houston)...:
"Extreme Wildfire Danger"
I realize I may get flamed for this, but it's extemely annoying for commuters like me. I look at the TxDOT signs for traffic updates, not amber alerts and reminders that it's dry outside, etc. Maybe I'm spoiled, but when I'm on the freeway and see this instead of 'X number of minutes to downtown', I get really irritated....
I think it's good to remind commuters of the fire danger, might stop someone from tossing out a cigarette in these drought conditions - hopefully they would have more sense than that, but you see a lot of people doing it. Looks like the trees are dying fast enough even without an added fire.

I'm a transplant here... I teach at the junior college. It's just the same thing day after day The black bears were recent news. I have not checked the levels but have been told Amistad is now starting to drop like a rock.
USGS has a vegetation mapping tool that's pretty new, I thiunk it started in 2010 http://ivm.cr.usgs.gov/viewer/viewer.htm It takes a bit to understand how to use it, but the "fire potential index" (FPI) & "relative greenness" features kinda open your eyes to the drought being more than an inconvenience. It also has some static maps, for example - here's the FPI forecast for June 14th
you can see that Texas isn't looking very green & areas north of Houston are getting very bad quickly
THE CHANCE
OF RAIN AND CORRESPONDING LOWER AFTERNOON HIGH TEMPERATURES MIGHT BE
COMING BY THE MIDDLE TO END OF NEXT WEEK AS MODELS INDICATE THE RIDGE
BREAKING DOWN AND SOME DEEPER TROPICAL MOISTURE POTENTIALLY SURGING
NORTH AND NORTHWEST TOWARD THE TEXAS COAST.

Please friends a personal request! My daughter is approaching shades of Bridezilla ( almost!) She is to get married OUTSIDE in Brenham/Chappell Hill on night of June 25th. She does not live here and has no clue how bad the drought is here. She just flipped on Facebook about how it will rain on her wedding day.! I was like, no it will never happen...but then I see something about the HGX above. PLEASE I know how unstable forecasts more than 3-5 days are...but could you give me opinion? Rain on evening of the 25th? Thanks for the personal question.
A bit of hopeful news regarding our rain chances this morning. The models are converging on a solution that will break down the Upper Ridge beginning early next week. While it is still days away and we have been down this road too many times only to see that mirage disappear, it does look like deep tropical moisture will begin pooling in the Western Gulf and even a frontal boundary may approach from the N around mid next week. I see that texaskaz has some concern over outdoor wedding plans on the 25th. We'll keep an eye on things and keep everyone advised.
