Update from Jeff:
Winter storm event continues across the region…but starting to wind down.
Freezing temperatures continue to sink southward into Fort Bend and Brazoria Counties into northern Galveston County. Temperatures across Harris County range from 29 over the north and western parts to 32 over the south and eastern locations.
Mixture of freezing rain and sleet continues over areas mainly south of I-10 and east of US 59. Some additional ice accumulation of up to .03 of an inch is possible with storm totals of .10 to .15 of an inch across much of the area. Areas further north from College Station to Livingston have had snowfall accumulations of 1.0-3.0 inches. 4.0 inches of snow has been reported in Onalaska.
Expect precipitation to end from west to east over the next 2-3 hours and temperatures to hover in the upper 20’s to lower 30’s through 800am. Faster ending of the precipitation may result in a faster rebound of temperatures toward 32 or above in the 1000am to noon time frame resulting in melting of icing.
Thus far there have been no major power problems and suspect with only minor additional accumulations power outages will be minimal and scattered.
Expect continued problems on bridges and overpasses for the next several hours as long as temperatures remain below freezing. Should start to see some roadway improvements by late morning….but extreme caution should be used on all roadways.
Crews are sanding multiple bridges with icing issues all across the region.

Light freezing drizzle/light isolated snow flakes still falling in NW Harris County. Portastorm reports more light freezing drizzle again in SW Austin at this time. Radar is not detecting this light drizzle, so be careful!

I didn't get anything from this event either. Outside is just like how it was yesterday...even a little drier....well in my neck of the words. I live in NW Harris but I haven't seen a snowflake or anything. Just some sleet frozen on the cars but other than that...it looks pretty normal outside in my area.

Update from Jeff:
Mixture of winter precipitation ending across the area.
Ice accumulation overnight has ranged from .05 to .10 of an inch with some sleet accumulation with that from roughly HWY 105 southward to near the coast. North of HWY 105 ice/sleet/snow accumulation has averaged 1-3 inches.
Radar trends show back edge of precip. Shield extends from Wharton to south of Beaumont and is moving rapidly eastward. Will see some additional ice accumulation of .01 to .03 of an inch over Matagorda, Brazoria, Galveston, and Chambers Counties in the next 1-2 hours before precip. Ends in all areas.
Temperatures range from 27 at College Station, Huntsville, and Conroe to 29 at Tomball and Katy to 30-31 at BUSH IAH, Wharton, Victoria, and Hobby and 33 at Galveston. With precip ending no additional evaporative effects are likely and temperatures should begin to slowly warm through the mid to late morning hours.
Extensive icing of bridges and overpasses has occurred in nearly all counties except the coastal counties. Ice will remain on these surfaces until temperatures rise above freezing at some point this morning.
Travel across the entire region is extremely hazardous with multiple freeways having extensive icing problems to the point where traffic is not passable.
Will examine the potential for possible refreezing of any melt today again tonight later this afternoon, once we see how warm we are able to get today and how much we can evaporate.

Light rain and about 32 on Galveston's East End with a flake or two flying.
Ice has formed on surface mainlanes of US 290. TXDOT is all lanes from BW8 to Eldridge.
Numerous freeways are being closed. Many vehicles are trapped on flyover connectors and ramps.

Nothing but a wee teeny bit of sleet with a "flurry" (probably just frozen mist) fell here in Atascocita over night. I thought for sure I would wake up to a nice blanket of snow this morning .
Nothing unusual falling out of the sky here, just rain at a balmy 32.5F.

It's probably going to take a while to 'warm up' today. The cloud deck is very obvious on visible satellite imagery extending well back into Central Texas.

Update from Jeff:
Light freezing drizzle has re-developed over southern Harris and southern Fort Bend Counties.
Surface temperatures have fallen about a degree in the last hour across Harris County and range from 28 NW to 30 SE. Light freezing drizzle is continuing to ice roadways. In fact some surface mainlanes are starting to ice especially on portions of US 290.
Surface temperatures have fallen near freezing across almost the entire area with ice being reported on roadways from west of Corpus Christie to SE of San Angelo to Waco to TX/LA state line and to the coast.
Road closures have increased over the past hour with numerous freeways and portions of freeways closed due to ice.
May have been a bit optimistic a couple of hours ago with warming temperatures, but should start to see the temperature begin to rise some in the next 2 hours…but not likely reach freezing or above until around noon.
Travel remains extremely hazardous and should be avoided.

It hasn't warmed up any so far, temp is stuck at 32.4 and that's the lowest we have seen here.srainhoutx wrote:It's probably going to take a while to 'warm up' today. The cloud deck is very obvious on visible satellite imagery extending well back into Central Texas.
