Please be aware that we are facing another potential flash flooding event this coming week
Please monitor the weather and if you need to leave, get out. We are already so saturated and our
bayous and creeks are just beginning to crest -
We need to be prepared.

Stay safe and weather aware.

This tidbit is from Jeff L Harris County Flood Control:

Residents across the entire region should be prepared for significant flash flooding and watershed flooding over the next 5 days. React immediately to rising water and expect flooded roadways. Never drive into high water…let me say this again NEVER DRIVE INTO HIGH WATER!!!

I've gotten a couple of emails during this recent flooding event asking what is the difference between VOLUNTARY and MANDATORY evacuations? There's a lot of new folks who have moved in to our area....

With Hurricanes, we have time to prepare and execute our plans and we should be aware of our area to make these decisions.
Flooding poses another situation. IN the past couple ofweeks, we have seen our rivers and creeks rise dramatically. Even those that we feel "never flooded before." Emergency Managers, NWS,Flood Control and other agencies, monitor the situation and then give the orders as whether it is Voluntary or Mandatory. The State of Texas can NOT make anyone leave. We hope folks have enough common sense to heed and understand the situation. (We hope at least).

VOLUNTARY means that the situation needs monitoring and the POTENTIAL for danger does exist in the future. You can volunteer to go before the situation gets crazy. This gives the person time to gather what they need in the chance they want to leave or the situation changes. Gathering your important papers, etc just like Hurricane Season. MANDATORY evacuation means IMMINENT threat does exist to life and property and you should heed your local agencies to get out. Whether you go to a local shelter or your support group (Family and Friends) Just like Hurricane Season. And, you would take the same items: Meds, ID, etc.... For PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES it is important to always have a plan to escape. Your plan isn't just for Hurricane Season - it can be impemented anytime. It's important for those with mobility issues understand that sticking around and "waiting" for the mandatory evacuation to be triggered, may be too late. Rushing water has power - even 6 inches of it. PLEASE understand what can and will save your life - this recent event (or should I say EVENTS since Tax Day) can only make us more aware that Mother Nature will do her own thing - whether you are prepared or not. She doesn't care, but I do. Let's plan and be aware this season. I hope this helps.

JUST a reminder, while we are enjoying these lazy hazy days of July......
Have you registered with 211 as of yet? Every year you must re-register
Who needs to?

Individuals who have a disability
Individuals who have mobility issues
Individuals who are transportation deprived
Individuals who are over 65 and need a safe place to go
Individuals who have communication barriers
Individuals who have other medical needs such as: electricity dependent

This service helps those who need sheltering during a storm.
If you do not have a family or support group to turn too,
it is imperative you register - remember: Galveston County is a MANDATORY EVACUATION zone.
Also those who are ELECTRICITY DEPENDENT (like you use a ventilator...) You need to get out of town.
(Even if they tell you to "hunker down") - even that area may be out of electricity for days/weeks.

Register today - or get in touch with your local OEM and tell them you are a person who needs assistance.

Thanks :D

Hello Everyone

As we leave the lazy hazy daze of July, we turn our eyes to August and we pay a bit more attention to
the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic.

Currently, there are two invests that the National Hurricane Center is interested in
96L and 97L.

97L may reach the Lesser Antilles by Sunday and spread into the Caribbean Sea.
96L is still deciding what to do :-)

Good time to go over some stuff:

Whatever 96L or 97L decides to do, NOW IS THE TIME to check your plans...especially if you are in the Accessibility and Functional Needs Community. This includes

*Individuals with Disabilities
*Individuals who are over 65 years of age and may need assistance
*Individuals who are dependent upon electricity - such as power wheel chairs/ventilators/etc
*Individuals who are transportation deprived
*Individuals who have a care taker.

These folks need to plan EARLY - once a storm gets into the Gulf of Mexico and decides to visit us, time is of the essence.

Please review your plans - talk to your family or support group about how you will evacuate
where you will go and what you will take

For those that need to use a shelter for safety: you MUST register with 211 or your local Office of Emergency Managers and tell them your needs. Such as: "
"I am a wheelchair user and need a ride to the bus hubs. I live in Galveston county"
Some volunteer will pick you up to get you to the busses, but you must TELL us what your needs are
We are NOT mind readers.
If you and a family member decide to leave via bus to shelter - must register also

YOU MUST REGISTER EVERY YEAR WITH 211.

TEXAS IS A PET FRIENDLY STATE - YOU MAY TAKE YOUR PETS WITH YOU BUT THEY NEED TO BE IN CRATES AND YOU NEED TO BRING THEIR FOOD. SERVICE DOGS ARE ALLOWED EVERYWHERE, BY LAW!

Bus Hubs in Galveston County:
Doyle Center - Texas City
Galveston Island Community Center - Galveston.

Please also remember GALVESTON COUNTY is a MANDATORY EVACUATION ZONE. Out means Out.
If you stay behind and get into trouble, and responders have to risk their lives to save yours, you can be fined.
Heavily.

So...as our two systems are still far away, lets do the smart thing:
Make or review a plan either to evacuate or
Make or review a plan if you are going to "hunker down" in areas that don't need to evacuate
(Unless you are electricity dependent)
kNOW WHAT YOU NEED IN BOTH CASES.

YOU know your disability better than anyone and what it takes to lead an independent life. We don't!
Help us, help you.

~~if YOU NEED HELP WITH A PLAN, PM ME

Happy August 1st Everyone

And right on schedule, deep into summer, 97L will soon become "EARL".
Right now its headed towards Puerto Rico and will travel to Jamaica and Cuba by Monday night/Tuesday
The NHC gives it an 80% chance of formation within 24 hours and 90% within 5 days.....

Although some models take it into Mexico, way south of us, time will tell.
However, it's a great time to check on your supplies, go over your plans
(or create one NOW).

Please read the post ahead of this one - it has all the details you may need just in case
EARL pulls a fast one.

No panic yet. Just a great time to review and restock....

Be safe/ Be weather aware

Updates as the week goes on.....
