A lot of lightning being observed off to the west of Houston around San Antonio and Austin.

Locations already around freezing have a good chance to see some thunder freezing rain or thunder sleet later on... Probably some hail too

Nice map. That's pretty much what I was thinking

Also, HGX would be smart to enter thunder into the forecast for tonight during the evening update.

If that does occur, it'll be for guys north of IH-10

Could it be since the snow pack is higher north of our position, vs north of central texas?

Sounds like an intensifying storm.

Thunder freezing rain or sleet. The last time Houston had thunder during freezing rain was January 1997.

One thing the 'helped' keep our temps in check today were those 'Lake Effect' snow bands and clouds from N Texas. Also Lake Livingston area had several reports of -sn this morning into mid day S of the Dam. Cold air advection continues to filter almost straight S over the areas that receive wintry precip yesterday. The SPC and radar suggests it could be a very interesting night and the HIRES NAM is suggesting convective banding. Stay Safe tomorrow morning folks.

SPC Update:

...SOUTH TX...

A RASH OF ELEVATED CONVECTION HAS RECENTLY DEVELOPED ACROSS PORTIONS
OF SCNTRL TX. THIS ACTIVITY IS PRODUCING LIGHTNING AND APPEARS TO
BE FORMING NEAR 700MB. 00Z SOUNDING FROM DRT SUGGESTS A PARCEL
LIFTED FROM 700MB YIELDS MUCAPE APPROACHING 500 J/KG. GIVEN THE
WEAK WARM ADVECTION AT LEVEL OF PARCEL LIFT THIS ACTIVITY SHOULD
GRADUALLY EXPAND IN AREAL COVERAGE OVER THE NEXT FEW HOURS.

I remember in 2000 or 2001, we had thunder and lightning but the temps stayed at 33 or 34. Very very heavy rain and lots of thunder. I was so mad when i woke up and had to drive to school that morning.

No offense, Srainhoutex, but what does this mean in English?

I see it, Nuby 3. Looks like it all seems to be moving northeast. As long as the freezing rain keeps moving that-a-way.....

Just got this email from CenterPoint:

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) is asking all customers to reduce their electric use as cold weather continues to cause a high demand for power across the state. Conservation will be especially important between the hours of 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. tomorrow morning. Additional information can be found on Twitter (@CNPalerts and @ERCOT_ISO) or on Facebook.

Thank you for your assistance.

All activity is expanding to the east though. There are bands pushing eastward along IH-10 towards Houston

This isn't even the main event anyway... The stronger disturbance will be here in the morning where a solid qpf shield should be over SE TX by then. Check out HGX's model output pictures on their homepage.

So its currently at 31 in Kingwood and falling...I see the rain on the way. My question is, what does this have in store? Is this going to be worse than what the local news outlets are calling for? Were these freezing temperatures expected this early in the area? I'm a teacher, so I'm wondering about what the morning will bring ;)
