Mesoscale Discussion 0005
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0336 AM CST Mon Jan 02 2017

Areas affected...Parts of central and east TX

Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 1...

Valid 020936Z - 021030Z

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 1 continues.

SUMMARY...While thunderstorms have been generally sub-severe so far,
there should be an increasing severe threat as they move eastward
across Severe Thunderstorm Watch 1.

DISCUSSION...Radar trends over the past hour have shown convection
along and behind a cold front across central TX generally remaining
sub-severe. This is primarily due to the strongest cores lagging the
surface front (evident as a radar fine line) and being slightly
elevated. One exception to this is a bowing segment moving across
Erath and Hamilton counties in central TX as of 0935Z. This line
segment will remain capable of producing large hail and damaging
winds (recently reported up to 70 mph in Hamilton, TX) over the next
hour. An increasingly moist and unstable environment downstream of
the front (into east TX) remains favorable for intensification of
ongoing thunderstorms, and additional development along the front
itself. All severe hazards will be possible, although damaging winds
should tend to become the primary threat with time as convection
likely consolidates into a line.

That makes for the second year in a row that's happened to a portion of our area!

Quite the storm. Up to 1.25" hail is likely happening. Lightning was enough to wake me up.

Our parent storm is on a Bryan-Brenham-Schulenberg line. More cells may develop immediately before it, it is already happening closer to the coast. Any developing cell can produce strong wind.

NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0748 AM CST Mon Jan 02 2017

Areas affected...Parts of east TX...western/central LA...and far
southwestern AR

Concerning...Tornado Watch 2...

Valid 021348Z - 021445Z

The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 2 continues.

SUMMARY...A damaging wind, large hail, and isolated tornado threat
will continue through the morning hours across Tornado Watch 2.

DISCUSSION...A messy convective mode is ongoing across far eastern
portions of Severe Thunderstorm Watch 1 and western parts of Tornado
Watch 2 as of 1345Z. Primary low-level forcing in the form of a cold
front and an attendant MCS will continue to pose mainly a strong to
damaging wind risk as it moves eastward through the morning hours. A
pre-frontal band of broken convection across far east TX into far
western LA continues to exhibit some mid-level rotation within the
strongest cores. Large hail and damaging winds will both be possible
with this pre-frontal activity.

12Z sounding from LCH and reveals a very moist low-level airmass
characterized by surface dewpoints in the low 70s, steep mid-level
lapse rates (8.0 degrees C/km in the 700-500 mb layer), and a
generally veering/strengthening wind profile with height. As diurnal
heating commences over the next several hours, a further increase in
instability is expected, and MLCAPE may become as high as 2000 J/kg
across the pre-frontal warm sector. Some veer-back-veer winds were
noted in the 760-560 mb layer from the LCH sounding, and this casts
some doubt on the strength/longevity of any supercells that may
occur ahead of the cold front. Regardless, there will be a threat
for isolated tornadoes through the morning hours across Tornado
Watch 2, as strong winds in the surface to 850 mb layer (aided by a
low-level jet) encourage effective SRH generally ranging from
200-300 m2/s2 across the warm sector.

There is some very angry weather going on now which started at about 4:20'ish this morning. Whipping wind, thunder, lightening and some heavy rain. It is a blessing that some (hopefully all) of the school children have the day off today.

Stay safe everyone!

It's a Pacific front, so those W to WNW winds will allow things to warm up once the clouds clear out. We still have a zonal flow, but that changes later this week when the colder air arrives. That said as there were some changes overnight via the reliable computer guidance suggesting the upcoming pattern is still very volatile and expect changes. The models completely flipped throwing a monkey wrench into what our sensible weather may bring late week into the weekend. Stay Tuned!
