A lot of them will be, unfortunately, especially young ones. They can handle mid-to-upper 20's. Teens not so much...

I covered my baby orange tree but it may have not been enough. Probably needed a heater and extra tarp but it's too late now.

Indeed. We were expecting low-30's, but woke up to 26 here in Brazoria Co. Didn't cover the citrus or turn heaters on in the greenhouse. We may be replacing a LOT of big and mature plants this spring. Two of our orange trees are about 20' tall. Hopefully, being on the south side of the garage protected them.

Arctic boundary moving across SE TX this evening…strong cold air advection will onset over the next few hours.

Latest guidance today has trended colder both tonight and through the weekend. Colder reading tonight now bring the surface freeze line deeper into SE TX and roughly along a lien from west of Huntsville to about Hempstead to Columbus to N of Victoria. This is supported by both the NAM and GFS and the latest run of the rapid refresh HRRR. Upglide of warm moist air above the shallow cold dome will increase after midnight and into much of Friday when light rain/drizzle will be likely across a good portion of SE TX. With lower surface temperatures could see a window of 3-6 hours (roughly 300-900am) across the western 1/3rd of the area where freezing rain or freezing drizzle may be possible. This is also the area where amounts are expected to be the least. Feel roadway temperatures will still be cooling into Friday morning and while surface temperatures may fall to 30-32 bridges will likely be still in the mid or upper 30’s. Think any very minor impacts from any light freezing drizzle will be across Burleson, Washington, Madison, and Colorado Counties if at all. Latest LAMP guidance does not get anywhere N of US 59 out of the 30’s on Friday and think this is the right idea…generally steady temperatures in the 34-37 range NW of a Huntsville to Victoria line and 36-39 for much of the rest of the area except 38-41 along the beaches. North winds will howl 15-25mph driving wind chills into the 10’s and 20’s. Friday evening we will be very close to local criteria for wind chill advisory as temperatures fall below freezing and winds stay up.

Next item of interest will be low temperatures both Saturday and Sunday with raw numbers coming in now at 19 for College Station, 20 for Conroe, 24 for IAH and 22 for Victoria. More confident we will be into Hard Freeze criteria north of HWY 105 Saturday morning and maybe again Sunday morning and likely even south of HWY 105…could be as far south as FM 1960/HWY 6 corridor. Looks like the entire area except the beaches will freeze both Saturday and Sunday mornings with upper 20’s into the coastal counties and likely even down well into the coastal bend. Could even see 30-32 down into S TX. Friday night and Saturday morning will feature a freeze with strong winds still in progress resulting in a damaging advective type freeze as the protective action of covering sensitive vegetation will be less useful as the strong winds will remove the “greenhouse effect”. Sunday morning will be the coldest morning and many locations will be at or below freezing for 8-12 hours.

Precautions should be taken to protect sensitive vegetation, pets/livestock, and north of HWY 105 exposed pipes.
I was hoping that Jeff would be wrong about this freeze, but he wasn't. I tried to cover my 8 foot philodendron but...they will come back. Thanks to all the Carnacs for the warning.

19 at 10 & Chimney Rock, now a whopping 23 degrees. Pressure is 30.73 and rising. From what Wxman57 said about calibration, maybe 21 degrees was the low.

Go Texans! I hope special teams and the defense scores as many touchdowns as the offense.

At 26, your citrus was probably burned pretty good, but it will come back. Especially if they are established and have hardy root stock. Sorry to hear about your garden. Seems like it was about 5 degrees colder than expected pretty much across the board. That's enough difference between moderate freeze protection and extreme measures.

I'm sure the guy who bought my old house lost his majesty palm. I told him to to protect it if it got below 24-25. He didn't.

Also seeing on NextDoor.com a couple of local businesses have busted pipes, and several homes in Imperial Oaks have frozen water lines into their homes. We wouldn't see this with mid 20's....just sayin'

College Station hit a low of 17°F this morning - coldest in decades. Checking to see if it actually dipped to 16°F...

The cold was in place, but the low didn't get cranked up robustly enough for significant winter precip. Insect smashing cold last night though.

Not unusual for this type of cold to over perform with a lot of advection and clearing skies. One more night of frigid weather...

Good thinking - that's the M.O. with citrus trees in central Florida.

Just wondering. Are the models showing a repeat next weekend?

Folks need to remember to drip their water. One of our friend's just called us, the place he is staying didn't drip the faucets, their hot water is now frozen. Than you have to be careful when it thaws. I think it was 1988 or 1989 when we had that big cold blast around Christmas time. We were dripping the faucets, I stupidly turned them off during the day before I left to Christmas shop. Came home, heard sounds of water. Turned around and water was coming down our walls! Not something I want to relive again. Dh said I should have never shut the water off. I would rather be safe than sorry, let it drip, let it drip. If it ain't going to snow, "let it drip, let it drip, let it drip."

So far not as extreme, but there are 'hints' that another Winter Storm will eject out of California heading toward the Southern/Central Plains.

Saturday morning briefing from Jeff:

Damaging freeze has occurred overnight…another damaging freeze will occur tonight!

Hard Freeze Warning in effect for all counties tonight except Galveston County

Maximum protections to pipes, plants, and pets should be taken.

Coldest low temperatures in at least 3 years and maybe since 2011 have occurred overnight with significant damage likely to sensitive tropical vegetation and citrus. Freeze overnight was significant with locations north and west of FM 1960/HWY falling into the upper 10’s and low to mid 20’s all the way to US 59 for many hours. Even Galveston feel to 31. Advective nature of this freeze with winds of 10-15mph has likely resulted in a lot of damage to area landscaping.

Very cold arctic air mass is in place over the area with many surface temperatures at 1000am still below freezing. College Station has been at or below freezing for 28 straight hours and is still 26 at 1000am. Will warm only into the mid to upper 30’s even with full sun today and once the sun sets the temperatures will plummet. Center of surface arctic high will be centered over our northern counties this evening with dewpoints in the low 10’s or upper 1’s. With clear skies, light winds, and very low dewpoints a widespread hard freeze (below 24 degrees for 2 hours or more) is likely for nearly all of SE TX tonight into Sunday morning.

Forecasted Lows Sunday Morning with Freeze Duration:

N of HWY 105: 13-18 (14-16 hrs)

N of US 59: 18-24 (12-14 hrs)

S of US 59: 25-29 (10-12 hrs)

This will be a destructive freeze, but with light winds protection of sensitive vegetation that was not killed last night will be more effective tonight.

16°F IMBY early this am

17°F at Easterwood

Looking to break through the 15°F mark tonight! Winds have really died down. Beautiful sunshine. 9°F dew point, and a high now of 42°F.

You are one of thousands of people with the same problem. Our plumbing Company has received about 1000 calls this afternoon.

Haven't we hit teens here within the past 4 years? I've been in Grimes County since 2012 and remember seeing a morning low in the mid-low teens on my weather station several winters ago. Piled hay around the water well for a couple days.

College Station hit a low of 17°F this morning - coldest in decades. Checking to see if it actually dipped to 16°F...

The cold was in place, but the low didn't get cranked up robustly enough for significant winter precip. Insect smashing cold last night though.[/quote]
