I know from personal experience that draining your pipes does work. It can be a nuisance but not nearly as bad as dealing with busted pipes. There were so many people I know in 2021 with their pipes busted. The faucet by the garage door was often the culprit.

This is so true. Our pipe from above the garage leading outside busted.

I beg to differ. It cost me $200 in lumber to protect a softener system, my citrus and garden is guaranteed to die again, and attic plumbing is at risk all over again. Freezing cold like this with no precipitation is a giant pain in the *** down here.
Yeah when you’re a homeowner extreme cold events are just not the same. I used to marvel at extreme cold events too. Once it sucks money out of your wallet then it’s not so fun anymore.
I mentioned the same thing a few pages back. Lol. When I was a kid I LOVED extreme weather events. But now that Im an adult homeowner, its a completely different story! I keep relaying in my head during a hurricane or winter weather, “crap! Now its gonna be my problem!” And my money. Not as fun anymore. But I still do love extreme as long as damage isn’t done. Example, Harvey! I would have had a blast and been in total awe… but since Harvey and Imelda flooded my first home and it was my problem, I now have PTSD. Lol. Everyone keeps mentioning how nice and wonderful this cold snap is but no one is thinking that many many are going to have a horrible christmas this year because of frozen busted pipes and flooded homes. Probably a few on here! Knock on wood!

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Houston/Galveston TX
1133 AM CST Mon Dec 19 2022

...New AVIATION...

.AVIATION...
(18Z TAF Issuance)
Issued at 1127 AM CST Mon Dec 19 2022

Deteriorating flying conditions underway as shra/tsra coverage
increases across the area. Ceilings should be falling into IFR
territory thru the afternoon. Intermittent LIFR cigs/vis can`t be
ruled out under the heavier downpours. Some of the strongest cells
inland today may be capable of producing some pea size hail. The
coastal low and upper disturbance should track east of the area
later this evening & mostly take the precip with it. That said,
low layers of the atmosphere will remain saturated overnight and
periods of drizzle/mist can be anticipated for a good part of the
night...esp I-45 corridor eastward. Expect prevailing IFR
conditions overnight and just slow improvement late Tue morning.

Folks, if your house is on a slab the risk of a broken pipe is low. The ground underneath that heats the slab will be at least 55°F. Do cover the outside faucets!!

The power and heat should be OK, so that should warm the attic (warm air rises). Just to be safe, DRIP or lightly RUN the water in your indoor faucets. Moving water does not easily freeze! Periodically run the faucets full blast for a minute or two.

We had no power or rolling blackouts and a 5°F and 9°F nights with 6 inches of slow on the ground in College Station during the Feb 2021 and I had NO PROBLEM with freezing pipes (knock on wood!).

IF you are build on a foundation, make sure all pipes are insulted in the crawlspace and again run/drip water in the faucets at night.

Not seeing that. I mean the GFS is a warm outlier but it’s still cold

This is the time where global models will lose the cold based off past experiences. The GFS especially. It could be 10-15° colder than what the GFS is showing. It’ll probably be more like 5-10 but I’ve seen before where it was off by 15 in the 3-5 day range.

Yeah, ensembles will still be the best route to go till we get within range of the Hi-res.

Yeah that wouldn’t surprise me one bit. The GFS always has a warm bias with cold fronts in the medium range. Once we get within 1-2 days it’ll slowly adjust back down.

People use the word torch too much when its above normal. It's not a torch. Its some Pacific air that scours out the cold, but it doesn't really get that warm, and that's probably thanks to a wet pattern.

EPO tanks again first week of January.
