I thought it would be interesting to have a thread concerning the 50th Anniversary of Hurricane Carla. We have some old timers that still recall that early September in 1961 when Carla meandered off the Middle TX Coast before coming ashore near Port O'Connor/Port Lavaca. Below is the infamous NWS Houston/Galveston radar image that many of us that lived through that event will recall viewing on our black and white TV sets from the reports of a little known KHOU reporter, Dan Rather...

I wasn't born, but I read about Carla. It was an intense and monsterous hurricane. Carla was larger than Katrina for certain. It would of been much worse if Carla made landfall around Freeport and than stalling out. :o

Areal shots of the aftermath of Carla. First image is of Pleasure Pier in Galveston. Second image is of Port Aransas Causeway, and the third is the Padre Island Causeway...

The Weather Channel is interested in talking with someone who witnessed Hurricane Carla-- whether they're an expert or just a regular person who survived the storm. If you have some names and contact information that would be very helpful. We are on deadline and want to do an interview as soon as possible. Our story is slated to air Sept. 9, 2011. Please give myself or our assignment editor Ioanna a call at 770-226-2119.

Thanks for joining us on the KHOU Weather Forum, Kim. I suspect a few of our 'old timmers' have memories of Carla and wouldn't mind sharing. And for our community, this serves as a reminder that you never know who is following our discussions...

I gave the information to my dad and step mom. My dad (Texas City) did not go through it, he evacuated north. My mom (League City), did, so I am hoping he calls to share the story.

Interesting to note that Carla happened on September 11, 1961, 40 years to the day that 9/11 occurred in 2001.

HGX has a great link up today. For those of us that lived through Carla, it is always a day to reflect on what can happen along the Texas Coast...
