VALID 12Z FRI JAN 24 2014 - 12Z MON JAN 27 2014

DAY 1...

...WESTERN GULF COAST STATES...

COLD ADVECTION IS OCCURRING ACROSS TX/LA AND A BAND OF MIXED
FROZEN TYPES OF PRECIP HAS DEVELOPED IN SOUTHEAST TX INTO LA. THE
STRONGER LOW-MID LEVEL CONVERGENCE DROPS SOUTH WITH THE FRONT INTO
THE GULF OF MEXICO.
LIGHT SNOW ACCUMULATIONS WILL BE POSSIBLE ON THE NORTH EDGE OF THE
PRECIPITATION AREA...WITH LIGHT SLEET/FREEZING RAIN IN COASTAL
AREAS OF THE UPPER TEXAS COAST ACROSS THE WESTERN HALF OF LA. THE
00Z NAM IS HEAVIER WITH QPF AMOUNTS ACROSS TX/LA THAN THE
GFS/UKMET/ECMWF. MANUAL PROGS USED THE 00Z GFS/ECMWF/UKMET/21Z
SREF MEAN PRECIP AMOUNTS AND THERMAL PROFILES IN THIS REGION FOR
AMOUNTS/PROBABILITIES. AREAS NEAR THE COAST IN SE TEXAS AND
SOUTHWEST LA ARE EXPECTED TO HAVE ICE ACCUMULATIONS BETWEEN
MEASURABLE AND A TENTH OF AN INCH AFTER 12Z. DRIER AIR ALOFT ABOVE

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HOUSTON/GALVESTON TX
351 AM CST FRI JAN 24 2014

.DISCUSSION...
SNOW AND SLEET CONTINUES TO FALL OVER THE NORTHERN HALF OF
SOUTHEAST TEXAS. SOME 1 TO 2 INCH TOTALS LOOK LIKELY FROM
MADISONVILLE TO HUNTSVILLE TO COLDSPRING. QUITE A LULL IN PRECIP
OVER THE SOUTHERN HALF OF THE REGION. COLDER AIR HAS SURGED INTO
THE REGION AND RESIDUAL WATER ON ROADWAYS AND BRIDGES WILL START
TO FREEZE. TXDOT IS REPORTING ICE ON MANY ROADS TO THE NORTH AND
NORTHWEST OF HOUSTON.

THE LATEST RAP AND HRRR SHOW PRECIP ENDING QUICKLY FROM WEST TO
EAST THIS MORNING AND THIS APPEARS TO BE BACKED UP BY RADAR WHICH
SHOWS VERY LITTLE DEVELOPMENT TO THE WEST. THE SOUTHERN HALF OF
THE REGION WILL PROBABLY NOT MEET WINTER STORM WARNING CRITERIA
BUT DON`T SEE THE SENSE IN SWITCHING THE WARNING TO AN ADVISORY AT
THIS POINT. WILL RE-EVALUATE AT 12Z ONCE THE MORNING SOUNDINGS
COME IN...BUT FEEL THE WSW COULD BE DROPPED BY 15Z. DON`T BE
SURPRISED IF AN UPDATED FORECAST IS ISSUED BETWEEN 6-7 AM.

FCST SOUNDINGS SHOW DRYING FROM THE TOP SO SNOW NORTH OF HOUSTON
WILL LOSE THEIR ICE CRYSTALS AND PROBABLY TRANSITION BACK TO ICE
PELLETS OR FREEZING RAIN. FURTHER SOUTH...06Z SOUNDING LAUNCHED AT
THE UNIV OF HOUSTON SHOWS A DEEP SATURATED LAYER WITH A WARM NOSE
BETWEEN 900-700 MB AND A SUB-FREEZING LAYER FROM 900 MB TO NEAR
1000 MB. FREEZING RAIN/SLEET MIXTURE WILL AFFECT HOUSTON METRO
AREAS FOR THE NEXT 3-4 HOURS BEFORE ENDING. THE STRONG RRQ WHICH
HAS ENHANCED LIFT IS PULLING AWAY AND OMEGA WEAKENS RATHER QUICKLY
THIS MORNING SO FEEL MOST OF THE SIGNIFICANT PRECIP WILL END EARLY
THIS MORNING. FCST SOUNDINGS KEEP THINGS CLOUDY ALL DAY SO DON`T
EXPECT TEMPS TO WARM MUCH. SKIES SHOULD CLEAR BY 06Z TONIGHT AND
WINDS WILL RELAX LATER TODAY. EXTENDED THE WIND ADVISORY ALONG THE
COAST THRU 15Z BUT THE TREND IS FOR WINDS TO RELAX THIS MORNING.

WARMER TEMPS ARE EXPECTED SAT/SUN AND MAX TEMPS SHOULD EXCEED 60
DEGREES BOTH DAYS. ANOTHER ARCTIC FRONT WILL CROSS THE AREA ON
MONDAY. OVERNIGHT LOWS WILL BE BACK IN THE 20S TUES/WED MORNING
WITH MAYBE A FEW SPOTS FALLING INTO THE TEENS. BOTH THE ECMWF/GFS
ARE DRY WITH THE NEXT FRONT WHILE THE CANADIAN BRINGS SOME PRECIP
ACROSS THE AREA. WILL LEAN TOWARD THE DRIER SOLUTIONS FOR NOW. A
WEAK DISTURBANCE COULD BRING SOME RAIN BACK TO THE AREA TOWARD THE
END OF NEXT WEEK.

Update from Jeff:

Freezing line progressing southward into Harris County with 300am temperature of 31 at Tomball and IAH.

Ice is starting to form on area bridges and overpasses especially on the high connector fly overs. Extensive icing is ongoing north and west of Harris County from Livingston to Conroe to NW of Corpus Christi. Fred Hartman bridge is ice covered.

Temperatures will continue to decrease over the next several hours into the upper 20’s/ lower 30’s across much of the area.

Lift is increasing from the SW and expect precipitation of freezing rain and sleet mixture with accumulation rates of .01 to .04 of an inch per hour to continue for several hours…likely until around 900-1000am.

Still getting a good mixture of sleet and wet snow over the northern counties with slushy accumulations near 1.0 inch from College Station to Huntsville.

Well, it looks like freezing rain/sleet will end pretty soon and still not a snowflake. Aren't I the one who said early on that when the word 'snow' enters the forecast do not believe it? And here I am up staring out the window straining my eyes looking for my one dang snoflake? Yet AGAIN, I got the shaft. But hey, I'm not gonna lie...I will be up and doing this again when the next threat comes. Dang the luck.

ConroeISD still haven't made a decision about school???? Good grief, it's a solid layer of ice outside!

LOL. The Montgomery County shield was up for you, redneckweather. I was surprised to see the snow mixing in with the sleet here in NW Harris County. Stay safe out there, gang. Ice is covering the grass and trees now up here in my neck of the woods. The 00Z Canadian and the 06Z GFS suggests we may do it all again overnight Tuesday into early Wednesday.

The Austin metro area is essentially encrusted in a thin but stout layer of frozen rain and sleet/ice. All schools and a growing number of business, including my state agency, are closed.

Will be interested to see our final QPF total and how it matched up with the models.

Update from Jeff:

Winter Storm event underway across SE TX.

Ice accumulating on all above ground objects and on several freeway overpasses and bridges. As temperatures have fallen to around 30 degrees, the bridges have quickly started to ice over. Several school districts are closed or delaying start times.

Have gotten a couple of reports of 1/8 to 1/10 of an inch ice accumulation across NW Harris County and snow amounts of 1.0-1.5 inches from College Station to Huntsville to Livingston.

Freezing/frozen precipitation will continue for the next 2-4 hours with most temperatures below freezing. Additional accumulation amounts of .03 to .08 are likely over the next few hours on top of what has fallen. Additional snow accumulations of .50 of an inch is possible mainly over Walker, Montgomery, Polk, and Trinity Counties. Possibly some snow will mix in across Harris, Waller, and Fort Bend Counties.

Sanding operations are underway on multiple freeways and tollway systems.
