Where is "here"? Are you getting thunder and lightning with your rains? What about strong winds? Bottom line: Should I start thinking about filling my generator's gas tank?
I'm in Imperial Oaks, southern Montgomery County. I have not heard any thunder but radar shows a couple of strikes up near Conroe. Nothing major. Just a good soaking rain with maybe a clap of thunder or two.
You're more likely to have an accident on the way to the gas station, in the rain, than losing power.

We've given ERCOT your coordinates, Paul, and they've assured us that they will be keeping a Special eye on your safety tonight.Paul Robison wrote: Where is "here"? Thanks, but it wasn't necessary. I CAN stand a little rain. But FUNderstorms, well, that's another story.Kludge wrote:We've given ERCOT your coordinates, Paul, and they've assured us that they will be keeping a Special eye on your safety tonight.Paul Robison wrote: Where is "here"? Pray for a broken drought!

...A WINTER MIX OF RAIN AND SLEET EXPECTED TODAY INTO EARLY THIS
EVENING...
AN UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE AND A COLD LAYER OF AIR NEAR THE SURFACE
WILL PRODUCE A GOOD CHANCE OF RAIN MIXED WITH SLEET ACROSS PARTS
OF SOUTH CENTRAL TEXAS TODAY. MOST OF THE SLEET IS EXPECTED TO
FALL GENERALLY ALONG AND NORTH OF INTERSTATE 10...AND SURFACE
TEMPERATURES ARE CURRENTLY EXPECTED TO REMAIN ABOVE FREEZING
THROUGH EARLY THIS EVENING. ISOLATED MODERATE TO HEAVY SHOWERS
COULD POTENTIALLY PRODUCE ENOUGH SLEET FOR BRIEF ICE ACCUMULATIONS
ON EXPOSED SURFACES SUCH AS BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES.
PRECIPITATION CHANCES SHOULD DECREASE FROM WEST TO EAST BY EARLY
THIS EVENING...BUT FREEZING TEMPERATURES WILL BE POSSIBLE AGAIN
LATE TONIGHT. ANY REMNANT MOISTURE COULD RESULT IN A FEW ICE
PATCHES DEVELOPING ON ROADWAYS LATE TONIGHT.
THOSE PLANNING TO VENTURE OUTDOORS TODAY OR TONIGHT SHOULD MONITOR

ROADS BECOME SLIPPERY.

As the upper air disturbance continues to move E out of the Hill County/Central Texas, I would not be surprised to see a few reports of sleet near the College Station area where the temperature has dropped to 39F. That cold pocket aloft may drop a sleet pellet or two as far S as Montgomery and Walker Counties on E into the Piney Woods of E Texas. My temperature has dropped to 46F in NW Harris County the past hour from 48F.

I agree. Look at this 3:51 PM Houston WX disco:
HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE AREA SLIDING EAST WHICH HAS GIVEN THE AREA
A NICE COOL AND DRY AFTERNOON. (bueno!) THE HIGH CONTINUES EAST ON FRIDAY
AND AN UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE OVER THE FOUR CORNERS AREA THIS
AFTERNOON SWINGS EAST ALONG THE RED RIVER. THIS SHOULD PUSH A
PACIFIC FRONT INTO THE HILL COUNTRY WITH MOST IF NOT ALL OF SE TX
CAPPED. PERHAPS THE FAR NORTHEAST AREAS MAY GET SOMETHING OTHER
THAN SPITS OR SPRINKLES ON FRIDAY BUT LIGHT NONETHELESS WITH THE
WARMING TREND CONTINUING. SEA FOG THREAT RETURNING LATE FRIDAY
AND SATURDAY. SATURDAY SHOULD BE VERY WARM WITH STRONG INVERSION
ALOFT AND SHALLOW LAYER BELOW THAT SHOULD WARM INTO THE MID TO
UPPER 70S FOR MOST AREAS. NEXT TROUGH IN THE SEQUENCE DEEPENING AS
IT MOVES INTO CA AND THEN TOWARD THE 4 CORNERS AREA SUNDAY
MORNING...IT BEGINS TO SHEAR SLOWLY BUT IMPRESSIVE MOISTURE IS
FORECAST TO SURGE BACK INTO THE AREA SUNDAY AND FUEL THE
DEVELOPMENT OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS. GFS/ECMWF AND EVEN THE
NAM ALL ARE HIGHLIGHTING AN AREA OF STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS
LATE SUNDAY OVER THE NORTHEASTERN AREAS (MADISONVILLE TO CONROE TO
LIBERTY) FOR TORNADOES OR STRAIGHT LINE DAMAGING WINDS WHERE
STORMS GET AWAY FROM THE NOSE OF THE CAP THAT WILL INTRUDE INTO
THE AREA FROM THE SOUTHWEST (STRONG CAP IN THE SW AREAS). (next model runs may tell a different story so STAY TUNED!) WILL CONTINUE TO SHOW 30-50 POPS FOR NOW BUT MAY NEED A NUDGE UP AS IT
GETS CLOSER. QPF OF 0.25 TO 0.50 IS LIKELY OVER MUCH OF THE CWA
(EXCEPT PERHAPS SW COUNTIES) AND WOULDN`T BE SHOCKED IF FAST
MOVING STORM DUMP 1-3 INCHES IN THE NE COUNTIES. BLAST OF CANADIAN
AIR SWEEPS THROUGH WITH THE STORMS AND THE AREA SHOULD DRY OUT
MONDAY AND POSSIBLY TUESDAY UNLESS NEXT S/W IS STRONG ENOUGH TO
BRING BACK SOME LIGHT RAIN TO THE SOUTHERN AREA WITH GOOD UPGLIDE.
Rain is your friend. Lightning is your enemy. Fear the lightning!
I think we could be seeing a cold spring like last spring.srainhoutx wrote:32F in NW Harris County this morning with a light frost.srainhoutx wrote:I'd almost be willing to bet I see another freeze before all is said and done up here in NW Harris County...

My favorite time of winter is arriving - the end of February, and the end of any extreme cold temps. March arrives tomorrow. We're gaining nearly 2 minutes of sunshine every day and the sun is getting about 1/2 deg higher in the sky each day. Hopefully, Sunday evening's cold front will be the last blast of colder Canadian air this winter/spring.
So, about my tomato plants..
Arctic blasts can come in March and even April. March 1932, 1978, 1980, 1989, and 2002 had Arctic blast and even snowed in March 1932. April 1971, 1973, 1987, 2007, and 2013 had Arctic blast.wxman57 wrote:My favorite time of winter is arriving - the end of February, and the end of any extreme cold temps. March arrives tomorrow.
